HOWLAND - Dr. Chris Efthimiou, of Health Source Chiropractic and Progressive Rehab in Howland has been treating aches, pains and kinks in the neck for about seven years but could be getting in the weight-loss business too.
Efthimiou said dropping a few extra pounds could be the key to ending some unwanted joint pain.
"If you drop weight you'll feel better. When you carry extra weight, it can put pressure on your joints and nerves," he said.
The program is something Efthimiou called "supervised weight loss." The patient is brought in for some routine blood work prior to the program and started with a "behavioral repatterning device," which he said was similar to an MP3 or CD player.
"We're trying to get to the reason why people eat... It's pretty exciting," Efthimiou said.
The new weight loss program is in addition to the other services Efthimiou offers.
"Backs, necks, shoulders, fibromyalgia... You name it," he said.
The chiropractor said business was going well. About 30 patients each day come to his office looking for some help, the most common of which seems to be sciatica, or pain in the legs.
"We're extremely happy with where we're at," Efthimiou said.
He has help from people such as Holly Betts, who works as a therapist in the office.
"I do massages and exercises with the patient, ultrasound and muscle stimulation," she said.
Efthimiou said his practice can take pressure off joints, muscles and nerves without having to resort to practices such as shots.
"We have a 90 percent success rate," he said.
