Engineer rehires 2 laid-off workers

Tribune Chronicle
POSTED: January 17, 2009

WARREN - Trumbull County Highway Engineer David DeChristofaro has recalled two workers who lost their jobs in cuts announced last week.

The recalled workers, however, won't be returning to their former positions, said DeChristofaro's director of administration and governmental affairs, David A. Rouan. The workers will be filling spots that had been vacant in the office from DeChristofaro's predecessor.

''We reviewed from within to see if anyone met those qualifications and clearly these two people do,'' Rouan said Friday.

Recalled were Lisa Blair to a payroll assistant position and DeWayne Hickman to an engineer position. Blair, formerly a secretary, will earn her old wage of $17.37. Hickman, previously an engineering technician, will start out earning $17.71.

The vacancies were not created as a result of the initial layoffs, Rouan said.

The others let go were surveyor/engineer Matt Dohy, son-in-law to former engineer John Latell; Latell's daughter-in-law, Amanda Latell, a secretary; and Nicole Klingerman, a bookkeeper.

The cuts of the three clerical workers and two engineering technicians were made from concern that gasoline and license plate tax revenue needed to operate the office would be lessening as the cost of maintaining county roads was on the rise, DeChristofaro said.

A secretary/payroll assistant earning $17.37 hourly. What about all the fringes??Medical etc. etc. etc. Must be nice to have such a wealthy community such as Trumbull Cty. that can afford to pay these kind of wages for "chair polishing" And you think General Mtrs. people should work for $14.00 an hour, give me a break...

Nothing like keeping things all in the family. Good Job Mr. Latell.

I seriously wonder if anyone here realizes that the County Engineer has absolutely N-O-T-H-I-N-G to do with the city of Warren?

Why is a payroll assistant(overpaid at that) needed when so many are now OFF the payroll?? Go figure,,,,

Also, a secretary making only pennies per hour less than an engineer? What is wrong with that! In addition, remember the article last week saying that starting Firefighter make like 12 bucks an hour? So, like the nurse said, 'saving lives is worth less than typing' only in the City of Warren!

Wow, that's a high hourly rate for a clerical position...I was a nurse for 25 years and never made that kind of money...wish I had known that before I made that career decision....answering phones versus saving lives....that's what's wrong with society. It's things like this that help make the decision for alot not to go into careers like nursing. You make more money for keeping your hands clean. Make sense?

" . . . but we all know that we would do the same thing if in the same position"

It's so nice for you to give justification to nepotism.

Warren and Trumbull County are just full of friends and family employees. It's too bad that they can't do the right thing and get rid of all this dead weight so we tax payers could get a break today on how much we pay in various taxes.

It's like that everywhere. Think about it...if you were in that position, wouldn't you give your friends/family jobs too?

...I mean really, think about it, you would do the same thing, and so would I. I'm not saying that it's right, but we all know that we would do the same thing if in the same position
