Curtain has fallen on Carousel
Tribune ChronicleThe last supper for Carousel Dinner Theatre was Saturday.
After 35 years - the last 20 in Akron - the venue billed as the largest professional dinner theater in the United States announced it was canceling its 2009 season and closing its doors.
In a news released issued Monday, Executive Producer and CEO Joseph E. Palmer blamed the theater's financial problems on the economy, which had affected attendance.
The theater was unable to adjust its budget to offset the attendance decline.
The doo wop musical ''Life Is But a Dream'' was scheduled to begin previews on Wednesday and was the first of six shows scheduled for 2009. Several limited engagements also had been announced.
The theater is asking tickets holders who purchased advance tickets and gift certificates on their credit cards to contact their credit card company for a full refund. No announcement has been made for customers who paid for tickets with cash or checks.
Carousel opened in 1973 in Ravenna and moved to its location in Akron in 1988.
