Robbery suspects captured
By MARLY KOSINSKI Tribune ChronicleYOUNGSTOWN - Two of the three men suspected in a Wednesday afternoon credit union robbery in Lordstown already were wanted in two shootings in the past two weeks.
One of them, 25-year-old Donnell R.Weekley of Lordstown, killed himself Wednesday night after spending several hours holed up in a house on Youngstown's South Side, surrounded by federal and city lawmen.
The standoff with Weekley began about 7 p.m. at 557 Breaden St. and ended about 10 p.m. when officers found Weekley in an upstairs bedroom, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Youngstown police said.
The other two robbery suspects, Reginald Cherry and Roceme Jethrow, surrendered almost immediately after the standoff began, police said.
Weekley was suspected of shooting 18-year-old Keith Holley, of 273 Idylwild St. N.E., in the buttocks during a drive-by shooting Nov. 8, a U.S. Marshals spokesman said. He was featured in the Tribune Chronicle on Wednesday as the U.S. Marshals Service Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force Fugitive of the Week and was wanted on a charge of felonious assault.
Cherry, 23, of Warren, is wanted on a charge of felonious assault in connection to a Nov. 11 shooting at Hayes and Maple Avenue. He was featured as Fugitive of the Week last week on felonious assault.
Jethrow, 28, of Warren, was shot in the foot last November in a drive-by shooting on North Park Avenue.
Cleveland FBI spokesman Scott Wilson said Cherry and Jethrow have not been charged in the 2:30 p.m. robbery at the Cavalier Federal Credit Union, 2255 Salt Springs Road S.W., but they are being held held at the Mahoning County Jail on other state and federal charges.
He said the robbery still is under investigation and he could not release more information about it, but did confirm that Weekley, Cherry and Jethrow are the suspects.
Bazetta police Chief Chuck Sayers said Thursday the robbery "appears" to be connected to an attempted armed carjacking at Wal-Mart Wednesday afternoon.
About 1:07 p.m., two men with a gun attempted to take a car from a 53-year-old Cortland woman in a remote area of the parking lot. The attempt failed, and the men escaped.
Sayers said Thursday that incident is now under investigation by the FBI, but Wilson would not confirm if the crimes are connected.
"We will see where the investigation takes us," Wilson said.
After the credit union robbery, several carjackings occurred in Lake Milton, Austintown and Lordstown.
According to the Cleveland office of the FBI, three men wearing dark clothing, masks and gloves walked into the financial institution and stole an undisclosed sum of money. One of the men fired a shot into the ceiling tiles while another leaped over a counter to grab money.
There were no customers in credit union but there were six employees. No one was injured.
As the robbers ran out of the building, one dropped some of the cash on the ground.
The Youngstown police report states that witness descriptions and surveillance video from the bank pointed to Weekley as being one of the suspects.
After investigating several leads, the FBI and Marshals Service determined that Weekley definitely was a suspect and he that he was at 557 Breaden St.
Officers from the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team, Crime Suppression Unit and marshals task force surrounded the home about 7:45 p.m. Police said the homeowner came out almost immediately, along with his brother, Cherry, Jethrow and an unidentified woman.
The homeowner told police that "D" Weekley was in the house and police said they could see someone upstairs repeatedly looking out the windows, according to the police report.
After about 45 minutes of announcing on the public address system for Weekley to come out, a gunshot was heard from inside about 9 p.m. Police said they went into the home just before 9:30 p.m. because Weekley told one of the residents that he planned to commit suicide.
Police checked the first-floor and basement with a police dog and didn't find anyone, so they deployed chemical munitions into the second-floor/attic area in an attempt to flush out Weekley, the report states. When he did not come out, police went inside and found him dead in the upstairs bedroom.
According to Tribune Chronicle archives, Weekley's older brother, Terran, died Sept. 16, 2001, at the age of 23 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The U.S. Marshals spokesman said Cherry, with a last known address of 645 Delaware Ave. S.W., is wanted on a charge of felonious assault in connection to the Nov. 11 drive-by shooting of Cedric Brogden, 18, of 580 Highland Ave. S.W. Brogden told police he was shot in the left bicep about 3 p.m. when a vehicle with two men inside drove past and began firing at him, according to a police report.
The car was stopped in the area of Highland and Fourth Street S.W. after a short chase. The passenger jumped out of the car and Sgt. Robert Massucci chased him for a short time before losing him in a wooded area, the report states. Massucci knew the passenger as Cherry.
According to Tribune Chronicle archives, Cherry was one of four men arrested following an April 28 drug raid at 164 Iddings Ave. S.E. during which police found $10,000 worth of cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana and pills. His brother, Ken'dall Cherry, 18, was shot to death April 3 in the parking lot of the Hampshire House apartment complex.
Jethrow, who has a listed address of 726 Oak St. S.W., was shot in the foot last November in a drive-by shooting on North Park Avenue, according to Tribune Chronicle archives.

I cant believe what Im reading here.. hmmm, yes I can.. considering the sources.. I have a difficult time understanding how one can feel sorry for thugs and lowlife.. especially ones that prey on others.. This incident, with these 3 did not start with this robbery or with the death of Donnell.. I dont know Donnell or Reginald.. do know enough of Keemi to know this does not surprise me, it also would not surprise me if he isnt behind the numerous shootings and other activity going on.. I dont feel sorry for any of them.. they are old enough to make their own decisions.. they know exactly what they're doing when they do it.. they choose to do wrong.. "life on the streets" is no excuse.. its a choice.. ahh the freedom of this great America to have choices.. MAKE YOUR BED!!! LAY IN IT!!! all you who support these guys are following the same path

All of you people are quick to cut people down.I know and am/was friends with all three of these men.Yes the were not angels but how many of you are?How many of you have actually grown up dealing with life on the streets? You have no right to speak about what you do not know! All 3 of these men are good men...they would give you their last dollar if you really needed it!And althought I am not even the same race 2 of the three are like family to me.If someone shot your little brother what would you do?If you have 3 hungry kids at home what would you do? If you are anykind of parent of have real family you would do anything you had to!I have been there myself!Though I am not proud of everything I have done it has all made me a better person. The only difference is I realized I was messing up before it was to late and left the area completely. The warren city police are a joke and a half.If you live in Warren you have to take care of your own because all you can depend on them for is to be a

i tried to stay out of this but come on...yes hes a felon, yes he has a family, yes there are victims, please try to see the problems and resoluntions in this, dont call the police to parent your child at the age of 8 do it yourself without physical violence and do something about a crime before it happens!!!!!!! that is the only way things are going to change ANYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!

You all misunderstood me, I wasn't referring to donnell and thinking about his family I was asking those questions as in what was running through the victims mind as this was happening, they have family too, I could care less what his family thinks of him.

I actually was held up at gun point at 16 years old working at Subway downtown by myself. Did that mess me up? yes for a long time! Do I wish that man ran off and killed himself? No I don't. I don't have to imagine, I know how scared those ppl were. It's amazing to me how so many ppl here act like we're saying what he did was ok. We just feel bad for the ppl who loved him. We're horrible people for feeling bad for ALL the victims in this? Out of respect for his family and friends, and all the people who were victims, I must leave this article alone, this isn't a fight worth having.

Think of his family and kids? Why? He sure the*****didn't when he was terrorizing the people he robbed and shot. What a very selfish man!!!! I do feel sorry for the children he left behind but, without him in their life, maybe just maybe they will be steered in the right direction!!

Karrilyn you must think they care about other people. They seemed to be so absorbed with themselves that they can't even see what this turd that ultimately flushed himself from everyones life done wrong. To say that is the risk someone takes when they except a job is just ignorant. I'm just glad he put himself in a sewer instead of a septic system. We then would have to fear his return as he leached into a field somewhere. I bet if one of them worked in a bank and someone pulled a gun on them then it wouldn't be such a light additude.

Nikon, Donnell may have family and friends who love him and think very highly of him but what about the people he terrorized when he made the choice to do what he did that day. Those innocent people can't just forget about what he did, what do you think was running through their minds when he fired the gun, how about the woman at walmart? They were probably afraid of not being able to see thier husbands, mothers, fathers, children etc again.
