11 am: GM formally announces plan to build Volt, Cruze engine plant in Michigan

POSTED: September 25, 2008

FLINT, Michigan (AP) -- General Motors Corp. says it will build a new factory in Flint to make four-cylinder engines for the Chevrolet Volt electric car and other models.

At a ceremony in Flint on Thursday, GM officials said production at the new $370 million facility will begin in 2010. The plant will make 1.4-liter four-cylinder engines for the Volt as well as the Chevrolet Cruze, a new compact car to be built in Lordstown, Ohio. Both new cars are slated for production the same year.

No new jobs will be created, but GM says the project will retain about 300 hourly positions.

Earlier this week, the state of Michigan approved $132.5 million in tax incentives for the new plant and to upgrade four other facilities, including the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant where the Volt will be assembled.

If i were flint mich i wouldn't trust gm as far as i could throw them. After what they did to flint the first time around. Plus i dont think alot of the flint pop will be working there i bet they use that plant for all the delphi and gm tranfers from here and other states. Dschweck they might make the engines here but i bet the parts come from china and japan and korea etc. 4 cyl engine those are motors of the past the only good 4 cyl was the dual overhead cam 4's. V-6 motors are the way to go nowadays. Will just have to wait and see what becomes of it all i hope good but i doubt it!

Why not buy the engine from China,Mexico or Japan.Seems like thats where most of the other parts on GM units are from?

I will buy the volt...only after about 5 years of production though, in hopes that they could work out some kinks..

Congratulations to Flint. However, good luck to GM, who will be trying to convince the public to buy this small, over-priced car.
