WARREN - A Warren-born rock star playing on an alternative music radio stations now will be the namesake of one of the city's grungiest streets.
Warren City Council on Wednesday passed a resolution changing the name of downtown's Market Alley to David Grohl Alley.
Councilwoman Marti Morn tabled the legislation at an earlier council meeting after police Chief John Mandopoulos claimed the change would cost the city money. The ordinance passed unanimously Wednesday after she took it off the table.
"There was the fee to the Tribune where we were charged to advertise the hearing," Morn said. "There were no addresses on the street (that would need to be changed)."
Grohl is currently the frontman for the Grammy Award-winning band The Foo Fighters and was the drummer from the 1990s grunge-rock band Nirvana. He was born in the city and lived in the area until a young age.
The push to rename the street in honor of the musician was led by Sgt. Joe O'Grady of the Warren Police Department and local radio DJ Fast Freddie.
There was talk about a dedication ceremony, which Grohl would be invited to, but Morn did not have details of that plan Wednesday.
