George Esmond Grove 1923-2008

CORTLAND -- George Esmond Grove, 85, of Cortland, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 27,1923, in West Mecca, the son of the late William R. Grove and the late Cora A. Cooper Grove.

George graduated from Mecca High School. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945, and he served with the 31st Field Artillery during World War II.

Mr. Grove worked at Van Huffle Tube as a die setter for 22 years, retiring in 1968.

While working at Van Huffle, Mr. Grove also served as a volunteer firefighter for Howland Township and later as a full-time fireman for Howland Township, where he worked for a total of 28 years, retiring May 31, 1985.

He was a member of the Bazetta Baptist Church, Trumbull County Firemens Association, Howland Volunteer Firemens Association and the Odd Fellows Lodge of Mecca.

George enjoyed bowling, fishing, watching the Cleveland Indians and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Martha L. Saltzmann Grove, whom he married Oct. 26, 1946; five sons, George Allen (Lynda) Grove of Farmdale, Ted (Carol) Grove of Farmdale, Rick (Sharon) Grove of Cortland, Ron (Cindy) Grove of Champion and Jim (Joann) Grove of Johnston; son in-law, Paul George of Cortland; brother, William Grove of Mecca; three sisters, Violet Childs of Auburn, Darleen Kubuj of Mecca and Beryl Francis of Mecca. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Grove was preceded in death by a daughter, Gerry George; two infant daughters, Kathryn and Jo Ann Grove; and three sisters, Roberta Moore, Patricia Hines and Eris Ilie.

Arrangements are being handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Stanley Mink officiating.

Interment will be at Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna.
