HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Walter Pete Rodgers, 57, 4206 Boxwood Court, Apt. A, Huntsville, Ala., died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 10, 1951, in Luverne, Ala., to Douglas and Beatrice Bozeman Rodgers.
Walter was employed by Crosby Mook as an office machine technician for 15 years. He attended Lakeview High School and ITT Technical College, and was a 2006 graduate of Revelation Seminar.
He was a member of Alpha & Omega Seventh-Day Adventist Church, where he was a deacon-in-training. He was also a member of the Black American Vets, and enjoyed traveling and playing chess.
Walter was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, from Feb. 6, 1970, to Feb. 5, 1976. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one overseas bar, Expert M-14 & Grenade and Sharpshooter M-16.
Walter is survived by his wife, Benita JoAnne Stella Rodgers, whom he married Oct. 6, 1990; a son, Eric (Tiana) Smith-Rodgers of Huntsville, Ala.; two daughters, Melanie (Mike) Rice of Phoenix and Alexandria Rodgers of Huntsville, Ala.; a stepson, Larry Smith of Warren; two stepdaughters, Carmanita Stella of Huntsville, Ala., and Donna Gaddy of Columbus; his mother, Beatrice Rodgers McTear of Warren; three brothers, James (Patricia) Rodgers of Warren, Demon Rodgers of Crestview, Fla., and Howard Rodgers of Warren; six sisters, Eva Mae Jenkins, Virginia Smith, S. Diane (Jacob) Bennett, Shirley (David) Rodgers Brantley, Sarah Rodgers and Delorise Rodgers, all of Warren; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas Rodgers; stepfather, Willie McTear; and two sisters, Earnestine Rodgers and Margree McTear.
Services will be noon Thursday at the Alpha & Omega Seventh-Day Adventist Church, where calling hours will be one hour prior to services. Additional calling hours will be 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sterling-McCullough Williams Funeral Chapel, Warren.
Burial will be at Ohio Western National Cemetery in Rittman.
The family will receive friends at 411 Federal St. N.W., the home of his sister, Virginia Smith.
