12:20 p.m.: Dillon gets eight years in heist

The Associated Press
POSTED: July 24, 2008

AKRON - A man who stole about $8 million from an armored car company where he worked was sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison.

Roger Dillon, 23, of Youngstown, told the judge that the heist was a stupid thing to do.

"I can't look back and justify what I did," Dillon said. "Things seemed hopeless and this seemed like a way out."

Dillon and his girlfriend, Nicole Boyd, 25, pleaded guilty in March to bank larceny and other charges in what federal prosecutors said was one of the largest thefts ever in northern Ohio.

Dillon and Boyd, who say they are still in love, struggled financially and their house was in foreclosure.

"I couldn't see all the good things I had in life," Dillon said. "I was focusing on the bad things. I can't believe I let it all go for the money."

U.S. District Judge John R. Adams sentenced Boyd to five years in prison on Wednesday. Dillon got a longer sentence because he organized the heist, recruited others to help him and violated the trust of his employer, Adams said. Dillon had faced a maximum of 25 years in prison.

8 years for 8 million. What was the name of that company? I think I might put in my application for employment.

Darrow loved kittens and was good to his mom, that's her point.

I guess I just find this whole sentencing thing funny because people in Warren (that are actively still in the news) have done far worse but have gotten much less prison time. I still find 8 years to be rather light for stealing $8 million dollars. As for his accomplice getting 5 years, that's rather light too. She had just as much input into the theft that he did. The 3 year difference is that he knew the codes to break into the vault.
