• SPRINGFIELD 2, MINERAL RIDGE 0: NEW MIDDLETOWN — Ronnie Bovo drove in both of the Tigers’ runs as Springfield beat the Rams in the first game for both teams and in the Inter-Tri County League upper tier.

Bovo’s single driving in Brandon Goist and his fifth-inning solo home run accounted for the Tigers’ offense.

Todd Kibby, who had 12 strikeouts, earned the victory and a one-hitter. Joe Miller took the loss for Mineral Ridge, which turned two double plays.

The two teams play again today at Mineral Ridge. The Rams’ scheduled game at Niles has been bumped to Friday.


• URSULINE 9, NEWTON FALLS 0: NEWTON FALLS — Nikka Bonamase hit a grand slam in the sixth inning and had five RBIs to lead Ursuline past Newton Falls.

Casey Lower pitched a complete game for the Irish (1-0). She struck out seven and retired the first 17 batters she faced. She allowed one hit, which came in the seventh inning to Jessica Connell.

Makayla Crouser was tagged with the loss for Newton Falls.

• North Canton Hoover 6, Howland 1: NORTH CANTON — Jessica Simpson had 11 strikeouts to pace the Vikings past the Tigers.

Megan Lilley and Erin Riccardi each had two hits apiece.

Abby Nicholas took the loss for Howland. She and Katie Peoples accounted for the Tigers’ two hits.

• Maplewood 11, Youngstown Christian 0: MECCA — Brandy Dunbar threw seven strikeouts and a two-hitter, while the Rockets’ offense pounded out 11 hits.

C. Thornton had a single, double and two RBIs to lead Maplewood.

Cecly Sanday had two strikeouts, but took the loss for Youngstown Christian.
