John J. D’Orio 1918-2008

WARREN — John J. ‘‘Pint’’ D’Orio, 89, Warren, died at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008, at St. Joseph Health Center.

He was born June 21, 1918, in Warren, a son of Pasquale and Carmela Mastropolo D’Orio.

He was a January 1936 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, and earned an associate degree in business from Warren Business College.

He retired in 1977, after 25 years, from Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in Warren, where he was the assistant manager.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1937 to 1945 aboard the USS Augusta and the USS Langley.

John was of the Catholic faith.

He was a member of the Warren G. Harding Touchdown Club, the Silver Dollar Club, BPO Elks Lodge 295, the Leavittsburg Athletic Club, the Leavittsburg Fish and Game Club, and the Leavittsburg American Legion Post 669. He was also a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts.

His hobbies included bowling, golf, playing cards, traveling and fishing. He enjoyed his family’s Sunday dinners, playing bocce with family and friends, and playing morra.

John married Emogene Grisham April 12, 1941, and she passed away April 12, 1979.

He is survived by a daughter, Shirley (John) Combs of Leavittsburg; two sons, Michael E. ‘‘Mo’de’’ D’Orio of Warren and Richard R. D’Orio of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Wendy Sowers, John David (Debra), Danny Paul (Rhonda) and Kim D’Orio, and Robert (Molly), Amy Jo and Lori Elizabeth Combs; seven great-grandchildren, Madeline, Rebecca, Jami Rose, Lerissa, Samantha, Luke and Shames; and two sisters, Grace Rajkowski and Angie Bugnone, both of Niles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, John P. D’Orio; a grandson, Richie D’Orio; a brother, Michael Anthony D’Orio; and a sister, Nancy Giancola.

Calling hours will be 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Peter Rossi and Son Memorial Chapel, where funeral services will be 5 p.m. Monday with Pastor Rod Winyard officiating, followed by a military funeral service. Inurnment will be at Meadow Brook Memorial Park.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the second floor at Shepherd of the Valley, and the ‘‘fourth- and fifth-floor girls’’ at St. Joseph Health Center, and also Hospice of the Valley.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Warren Family Mission, 361 Elm Road N.E., Warren 44483.
