Raven Your comments are exactly why this type of letter to the editor is appropriate and needed. Ms. Norman is simply trying to raise awareness on an issue that affects this and many surrounding communities. I don't feel that she is "advertising". How presumptuous of you that addicts who may be looking for recovery would not be reading letters to the editor. Addicts come from all walks of life and not all are criminals, as you so blatantly insinuate.

I think you have it backwards...What I said shows my lifetime of knowledge on the subject, I have had to many family members and been around to many people at the bar we owned I'd say I'm an expert on the subject. I have lost to many family and friends to count. I'm done talking on that subject.

ohcwby, your lack of knowledge on the subject is apparent. It has nothing to do with how often, how much or what. It has to do with what happens to the person when they do. Part of what you say is correct, it is the individual and how they and their body and mind react to what ever it may be. Like somebody said on another page. We all know the history behind drugs and alcohol. So when any of us at anytime chooses to take that gamble. it is just that. A gamble. Some day it could be one of your kids, grandkids, niece, nephew, etc... Don't be so quick to judge. That being said I don't excuse bad behavior for chooses made while under the influence. If you choose to drink until stupid, make a stupid choice, you are also choosing to live with the consequence.

That didn't make much sense....I see a difference between functional drunks/drinkers and functional drug addicts/users. I know first hand I grew up in a family with people just like that and have owned a bar/tavern with my wife from 1984 til 2000 and I can see the difference in both. Some people can handle it and some people can't. I know very well off people that own a business and do very well and yet drink every day, I also know another couple that also own business that does very well an they smoke pot every day they both have families an function like normal people. So I'd say it depends on the person. Thank you and have a nice day. : )

Raven there are plenty of addictions that are accepted and even encouraged in our society ..such as work .. eating .. not eating ..power..gambling ..running.. lifting .. they become obsessions and can't be stopped by sheer will even when the person wants to stop.. that is why this rally so important ..if god has blessed you with normal (a cycle on washing machine)life I say great ! .. there are people who don't have answers and need answers .. don't get in their way just cuz you don't.

to the writer of this article , this column is called letters to the editor not an advertisment page. i do not believe there are any addicts here, i think we who make comments are true law abiding citizens who like making our comments heard, so please do not place an add in letters to the editor with respect thank you

This may be good. However, there are too many times that addiction and mental issues are used as an excuse of those infringing on normal people. They even make up medical terms to justify how people act. ADD, Bipolar, Etc.
