Novak was being a good union member

August 18, 2013

DEAR EDITOR: Your Orchids and Onions column criticized Al Novak for picketing at a new grocery store, but the man is only doing his job as a union member....

He should resign from council immediately - and then he can be all the union stooge he wants to be on his own time

What about being a good employee?? Seems mister Novak thinks the union signs his check. Is it any wonder unions are dying.

Mr. Novak is in a serious breach of ethics. He is a council member, supposedly representing the people of Warren, but actually representing his union. The letters they send out have his name at the top. He said he took a year off to do union business, and is representing the union. Why is his name at the top then, does everyone know him as Al Novak the city councilman, or Al Novak the union thug. He is using his name recognition to tell every foreign investor that they better stay out of Warren. Who does the public union negotiations with the city, is it the union guy? Or helps approve contracts for work done in the city? The only UFCW store in the whole area that pays more than minimum wage is Giant Eagle, because they are corporate owned, the rest pay less than Bottom Dollar and have no benefits. This is fact. There should be no union members on city council or labor boards, or county trustee, or school boards. They represent the people, not the union.

1 EVERYONE has the right to peacefully protest on their own time. Doesn't perturb me.

2 Why would anyone, with the initiative, skills and work ethic to obtain a desirable job, voluntarily defer to a union to negotiate his or her pay and working conditions?

3 Just because comments are made anonymously, it doesn't make them any less valid.

Al Novak is just protecting his paycheck. He makes his money collecting vig from poor people.

Gotta keep working full time for that UFCW, you know, the union that STEALS dues money from minimum wage workers.

The union that has over 100 friends and family at the top who outearn the head of the UAW.

The same one with almost 1000 more "representatives" making $100k incomes on the backs of the poor.

The one doing such a good job of "representing" their membership that most of them are making minimum wage part time with no benfits?

Al Novak would have been no where near that picket line if it was one of his "union shops" where people make less money and get fewer benefits than Bottom Dollar.

I wonder how much a year the UFCW pays Novak for stealing from people who couldn't find a job without a Union hand in their pocket?

Daniel: Maybe Al protest all the copanies in the Warren area that are foreign owned. They provide good jobs but they are foreign owned.

Also, lets shut down V & M Star(Vallourec)

He is an American and has every right to protect the working class American. And Kudos to any elected official that does so. Orchids to him.

Maybe a good union member, but not a good elected official who is expected to represent ALL constituents equally and without prejudice towards any.
