When is a free food giveaway really free?

May 12, 2013

DEAR EDITOR: So, when is free, free? How is it that here in Warren we have a Community Volunteer Council (CVC) which distributes free contributions but many prejudices? I recently went to CVC on......

NEWSFLASH: Not everyone who accepts assistance is unemployed. Some, actually quite a few, have college degrees that barely pay more than minimum wage. Some even have multiple jobs and can't feed their families. Don't be so quick to assume that everyone accepting charity is beneath you because you are fortunate enough to afford not to. Be glad. Have a little compassion. Nobody is asking you to give away anything, heaven forbid.

First of all how do you know for a fact that "things are being with held from the public"? I'm not unhappy that I work I am actually proud that I work. What I am unhappy/tired/sick/fed up with is the whining that some folks have who feel entitled to everything for FREE!! Go to a third world country as I have to work for awhile and you will see that even the low income people in the USA live like millionaires in comparison. It's greedy to come here and complain about some silly cakes she thinks she should have gotten for free and maliciously accuse the volunteers of hoarding baked goods is quite silly. She should get a job!! I'm sure she gets plenty on her SNAP card to buy cakes. That is the reality.

You people who comment here are so not in touch with reality and very judgmental! What Ms.Jones is arguing is that if the items at the giveaway are freely given to them to distribute, why are things being withheld from the public? While agreeing that the matter is somewhat "irrelevant", I still agree with her argument. Don't be so quick to assume that she can't provide for her family. Clearly, that is what the giveaway is for, to give to those in need. Perhaps Ms.Jones is raising children who don't belong to her, they could be foster children or maybe she is a grandparent raising grandchildren. In either case, you people should be more considerate and watch the way you word things. Not everyone is able to go out and work! Some may have transportation issues, disabilities or any other special situation that hinders them from working. It seems to me that the working class is unhappy with the fact that they do work instead of being proud of the fact that they can provide for th

Well in all reality this letter is silly. I don't get ANY freebies because I am too busy WORKING to support my family. Everything I have I paid for with money I earned WORKING everyday for the last 37 years. How do you or the whining moron who wrote this pathetic know if any people involved in the "giveaways" are supposedly taking things? If she doesn't like it she should provide her own cakes!! Sheez what are you going to suggest next a! GIVEAWAY POLICE FORCE? Get ajob Lady!!

cont. are not undermined by greedy people that use these events to fill their own well filled pantry even more, instead of sharing the good will with the children of need. The children of need, like the children of Ms. Jones.

I knew that people would chew at this letter like sharks on bloody meat. Ms. Jones, the writer of this letter,is guilty of poor writing...only.She worded her letter in a manner that seemed at first glance that she was complaining about not getting enough free goodies. She was not.The intent was to alert the community to the nefarious actions of those that are distributing the food. Our community is a very caring and giving one.Ms. Jones is grateful for that, and very much in need, yes,VERY much in need. Her point was that there are people that volunteer(some) that take for themselves the lions share of donations, stash them in their own vehicles, and then hand out the scraps that they found too small or useless to pilfer for their own use.It is THOSE people that she is complaining about. Not the good citizens that donate,or the goods that they donate.People donate in good faith, and the organizations that receive the donations should take stronger measures to ensure that these acts of good will

I am wondering...if had been only one apple you were given, would you have taken time to write a letter about it? What the heck are they giving away sweets for?

Here's a idea Janna....go to your local grocery store and w/your food stamps, buy a cake mix and icing and back your own cake for your children! The gas or electric it took to bake the cake...well you can take that out of your monthly allowance check.

She's got a point, folks in charge of charity distribution always act like their personal finances are involved. In Cleveland Churches give out a gift card for free turkey, but those responsible called their friends first, kept some, didn't advertise and told some folks they ran out when they had'nt.

So she absolutely has a legitimate concern if this behavior is taking place at a local free food give away. It shows these people are less about charity and more about power & authority. I've heard similar stories about other welfare services.

With all that is going on in the world, I am sure they will put these "FREE" Sweets on the top of the priority list.
