Stop playing with religion, read the Bible

May 6, 2013

DEAR EDITOR: Men don’t want to hear what I say, but people better stop playing with religion and read Matthew Chapter 24. Jesus told us how it will be just before He comes back to Earth....

which bible? since the earliest maccabee writings there's been many versions of the bible. its gotten so diluted its not even a joke anymore. people change faiths like they change socks these days, because few ever take the time and effort to study, understand, appreciate, and commit themselves to what they "believe" in. even the ones beating their own drums don't know half of what they shout about. If you're going to be a "devout" chritian, buddhist, hindu, etc. make certain your head and heart are in the right place for the right reasons, before you go passing judgement on others. oh, and by the way, it doesnt matter which faith you follow, passing judgement is still Gods/Shivas/Buddhas job, not ours.

Im curious 'dwellerinthewellofknowlege', when did she say she thought he was white? Trying to make some racial thing out of nothing? He was a Jew, not sure what that has to do with his message. @defeatsb5 If you don't believe and they aren't real, no difference. If you don't believe and they are real, you go to hell. Pretty simple. People have perverted religion for evil to cause pain to untold amounts of people. If the devil is real, wouldn't the first thing you would attack is the thing that teaches people about your enemy? Looks like it worked perfect in your case. :]

Doris can we sing and dance while wailing our arms in the air? Just to let you know, I've survived many of final days proclaimed by plenty a wacko.

What if you don't believe in God, Doris? Or Jesus? Or the Devil?

It is almost impossible to over-estimate the influence of the Bible on western Judeo-Christian culture/literature/life, so, I suppose, that's reason enough to read the Bible at some point -- maybe even to go to church, if you really want to be able to understand how religion has influenced the way we think and behave, both individually and as a society, for good or ill.

But the Bible as a blue-print for living? No. Matter of fact, that holds true for just about any of the world's sacred texts.

Religion has been a source and a cause of untold pain, suffering, barbarity, perversion, and criminal behavior over the centuries.

If we were able to divorce religious doctrine/dogma/orthodoxy from our quest for a spiritual life, there might be some hope for having a spiritual life of some sort, apart from our ridiculously puerile notions about the influence of God and theology on human behavior.
