Where is the pride in the American flag?

April 21, 2013

DEAR EDITOR: Where is the pride when displaying an American flag that is torn and tattered? There are quite a few flags being flown in downtown Warren that are a disgrace....

This flag doesn't stand for politicians we like or dislike . . . it doesn't stand for a legal system that leaves a lot of citizens without justice, or a health-care system that is lacking for many.

It doesn't stand for wealth or welfare and it isn't a battleflag to justify war.

It stands for an idea of government for and by the people.

It stands for the wounds suffered by those who answered the call to duty without reasoning or questioning the motive of politicians.

It stands for the blood shed of citizens who wanted and were willing to fight for a better way of life.

Our politicians may be less than stellar and although many of our policies are certainly lacking moral direction, what the flag stands for today, hasn't changed from what it stood for through the ages.

Let our politicians become tattered and torn and sounding like broken records with broken ideas, but for God's sake honor the flag... with honor.

Well I sure don't want to disrespect Johnny Cash, BUT I'd rather disrespect him than the Flag. There is a proper protocol when one is flying the National Colors. Flags that are damaged or soiled are to be properly burned. Ragged flags are ok in music but not on flagpoles.

Please google in "The Ragged Old Flag".

You are correct David, It would be better to not fly the National Flag, than to show the disrespect of a torn and tattered flag.
