Trash haulers go off the job against Allied Waste

March 29, 2013

Trash haulers for Republic Services / Allied Waste in Youngstown walked off the job just after midnight Thursday morning following ongoing labor dispute....

What really grinds me is my garbage service, paid for by me, is interupted because my trash hauler won't cross the imaginary picket line. I want compensated for my time picking up garbage at the curb caused by hungry animals.

I recycle as much garbage as I can, besides on the road a lot so it limits waste to the curb too. I hope this labor dispute is settled soon. For everybody's sake.

Nobody wins in a Strike, and often ends up costing everybody, even the replacement workers.

Most who are quick to bash unions, don't really understand how union shops operate and why they were started.

I no longer belong to a union, never filed a greivances in over 20years. Never had too.

The union negotiated competitive wages/ health care and retirement.

Not all jobs in my opinion should be union, but it was necessary in my past work enviroment.

Everybody has a right to an opinion, but do your self a favor and talk to a couple people who actually worked in union shops before blasting.

Good freinds was a salary employee at a local union plant on strike years ago. Told me this..

The replacement workers were forced to work ridiculous hours, 16 to 20 some days, 7 days a week.

Short cuts in regard to safety were the norm, and resulted in serious injury in several instances.

The replacement workers were paid a fraction of the shops lowest paying labor job.

The replacement workers and company salaried people (who were forced to do hourly jobs, without training, & little knowledge of operations), did so much damage to equipment, it took weeks to fix once strike was settled. Cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Articwoof, I wouldn't refer anybody to a company with a labor dispute! That is just foolish. Unfortunately, and I don't condone this fact, but things can get nasty in these situations.

If there is an unfair labor practice, how many of you would ignore it? It may just be a safety concern. Strikes aren't ALWAYS about $$.

Companies also know its tough to find a job, and easy to replace picketing workers, does anybody think the company will treat replacements BETTER?

The Teamsters Central fund will run out of money--this is a fact- Companies can not live with the Teamsters having an open check book, no company could exist under this arrangement.

This is a win situation for the employee but the Teamster leadership wants to filter the money thru their hands---

Does anyone actually have any facts pertaining as to why the workers walked off? Until you get the facts, which I don't have, please reserve your opinion, rather than spout the predictable pro-union, anti-management, or pro-management, anti-union rhetoric that we're reading here.

Republic Services / Allied Waste General Manager Douglas Dunn said previously that if a work stoppage were to occur, the company would have a plan to continue to meet the trash hauling needs of the community. That says it all, here come the SCABS.

mamaj7272, I can understand what your saying, however, when does to much of your check going back to the company, become to much? This is slowly happening at all jobs. I guess when our children and grandchildren are in same place as our grand and greatgrandparents owing the company money on payday, then and only then will the union haters understand what these union employees are trying to do. Most of these companies are making record profits, yet employees are to take concessions, benefit cuts and pay higher taxes. The wicked worm will wiggle as the wind whistles through the woods.

Ohios unemployment ***** just like workerscomp the laws here are awful my husband took a job at phillips an there on strike an the people on the picket line ******** there insurance rates are too much but they will soon find out when u have no insurance an struggling to receive ur unemployment from this state people need to recognize the economy ***** don't be a follower keep your job

I have around 40 applications on my desk right now for people who are looking for work. I am hiring 4 people, the other 36, I will give them Allieds phone number. Many will be happy to get a job, to bad the Union people are not happy they have one.

Don't worry, replacements will be hired to collect your garbage & trash. Once again we see foolish union strikers who will gain nothing except join the unemployment line with out being able to collect unemployment benefits. Striking in this economy is stupid.
