Fans need to ease up on local referees

February 21, 2013

When I was young, my father taught me a valuable lesson about referees and sports....

As an athletic administrator and former coach, I found amusement with this article. It needs to be remembered that fans pay to see the game, not the officials. The officials are working the game with the understanding that their future as an official is dependent on their ability to make calls to the best of their ability. Fans who are critical of officials need to join the local association and find out just how difficult it is. I used to have a sign on my desk that read, "Bad swings and bad throws lose more ball games than bad calls."

Refs do have a direct outcome on games. If they are good experienced refs in any sport they usually are in control of the games whether its Football, Basketball, Baseball or Soccer. They confer and correct any missed calls. If they are arrogant self appointed LORDS they rule as though they are GOD. That's the difference between good Refs and poor refs.

What happened to Warren G. Harding Basketball Team several years ago at the Regional Basketball Finals in Cleveland, Ohio was a complete travesty. Allowing a 3 point shot AFTER TIME HAD EXPIRED IN REGULATION, was a totally and complete error. It was done to help the home team, St. Eds, by Cleveland Area Refs Association advance over an outside school, Warren Harding, coming in and winning fairly and rightfully advancing.

Refs that are excellent & humble get respect. Refs that are horrible arrogant & jerks deserve all the abuse they bring on themselves. "What You Sow Is What You Reap"

TheBear , you must have been at the same game as me Thursday night . Lol. Players told me the fans sitting behind their bench were so Bad one of their coaches was about to go into the stands to ask him to Stop. (He didnt) That's bad . Question calls ? That's fine make your point , without Malice and move on. Some officials better than others , it's a lesson in life and isn't that part of why we want out kids to play HS sports ? To learn about life ? Question the call .. Not the man . And there is a break point where it's done , you yelling isn't gonna change it anyway.

Thank you for the good article, but it was too long, too many words, for the knuckle-dragging troglodytes who go watch high school aged (and younger) kids play, and then scream obscenities at the refs, get in fights in the parking lot, call the other team's AD the next day telling him his players all cheat, etc. The wording needs to be much tougher: ACT LIKE AN ADULT WHEN YOU GO WATCH KIDS PLAY.

Aa always there are two sides to this basketball story. 1.It's hard being a basketball referee.

2.Fans pay to get into the Place.

Conclusion: Ref's miss and make bad calls and Fans call them out on it.

Profanity should never be used to insult a referee but telling a ref to get an 'eye exam' is acceptable

I have seen A few shady happenings on local courts ... But in reality with the hundreds of games I have seen the truely shady performances are a fraction of games. I have Coached and reffed and yelled at refs. officiating myself ... Has helped my overall ability to give them breaks. Humans make mistakes and that's life. All we can ask us be consistant !

How many people purposely do bad things on their jobs. The refs are getting paid and are being evaluated and want to do a good job but they are human also and have emotions but to say they intentionally do it is wrong.

Let's be honest here, there are some terrible refs in this business and with three of them on the court they should be able to get it right!! Are they human, yes, and they will continue making mistakes. Do they ever request copies of the games to review to see where, just maybe they should have been more observing?? Can't blame the crowds when two refs make a different call on the same play and this idea someone has to be laying on the floor dying before they call a jump ball is ridiculous!!!

Let's face it, the general public doesn't study the rules. They watch NBA games and remember rules from when they played. However saying this, paying $6.00 to watch a game, doesn't give you the right to act like a fool. Basketball is a "Right now" sport. Meaning, the action is right now and requires us to make decisions right now. I agree that not all officials are as prepared as they should be. But poor sportsmanship, and blatantly obvious fouls SHOULD ALWAYS be punished. Remember, most officials have careers in something other than being sports officials. Believe it or not.....WE NEVER CARE WHO WINS.....EVER! For what we are paid, why would we care? Most of us are referees because we study the game, we love being impartial, we enjoy knowing the rules and the spirit of why they were created, and most of all, helping ensure that there is a level playing field by enforcing the rules. Do we miss calls? YES! Do we try to cheat teams? NO. NEVER. It's only a game!

I believe for the most part that most of the refs try to be fair. But lets face it there are a few that cannot be partial and are nothing more than a big bully with a whistle. I have seen it.

It will never change. Be it basketball, baseball or football. Parents will embarass their kids by yelling stupid things from the peanut gallery AKA the bleachers.
