Actually, YSU has changed A LOT since I went there in the 80's. They tore down a huge amount of the nasty housing that used to be on 5th Ave, put in extra parking, a gas station and I believe McDonalds are where the nasty houses used to be. The police dept has expanded also. What happens off campus should not reflect upon YSU.

Well at least their police dept. was smart enough to do a residue test in order to prosecute these morons with or without witness cooperation. Warren police dropped the ball when the guy was shot on Idlewild and the victim chickened out leaving a thug on the streets to shoot again. Next time he may shoot to kill so as to leave no potential witnesses! Had they tested him for residue he could've at least been charged with discharging a firearm, CCW, or something to keep him off the streets.

I do not think the students who attend YSU are putting thier life at risk. UNTIL, they are out at 2:40 AM in the morning. That right there explains a lot, I do agree, as facts come out, the story may change. I understand the social scene, I respect that young adults are exploring at this time in thier life. But common sense, you do not drive around in a city at night or early morning. THAT is when the thugs, punks, drug dealers and hookers crawl out of under thier rocks. Kids, go to class, have your fun, but go home at midnight, if not sooner.

Just don't understand what this person, IF A STUDENT, is doing out at 2:40 a.m? One part of WarrenProud's statement that I agree with is more will be revealed. I don't believe this man just randomly shot at this car while the people in it watched. I think the police will reveal more as they investigate. My guess is drugs are involved. These apartments across from Cafaro and Lyden are known for drug activity and heavy parting amongst students. More than likely all this over a joint and the few bucks involved. Sad that this is the level people go to over a few bucks.

I agree that riding around at 2:40 a.m. within most communities is not a wise thing to do. I hope she is ok though.

YSU is an awesome University!!! Many success stories began at YSU. The story said this happened at 2:40 AM. Not a time that students are going to class.Cruising in any city in the middle of the night is not a great idea!

I'm sure there is more to this story then what has been told - I'm waiting to here the rest of the story. That being said, the YSU area of Youngstown is unsafe. Who wants to go to college where you put your life at risk every day?

Recently heard enrollment is down at YSU. Maybe this will help explain it.
