Wild night in Windham

JFK walks off floor before game ends

February 6, 2013

WINDHAM — You’ve undoubtedly heard of a walk-off home run in baseball. Basketball’s version of a walk-off happened Tuesday on Marty Hill Court when the John F....

It is very sad to see the JFK Assistant Coach lie about his reasons to leave the court. Nothing was thrown at his players. Their coaching staff was called for 4 Techical Fouls. They rode the refs all game. And the "near brawl" was nothing more than 2 players going hard for the ball. The JFK program should be embarrassed from the coaches to the fans. None of them proved to be role models to the players.

PLZ.... JFK HAS LOST TO THE TOUGHEST TEAMS IN OHIO LOSING BY MORE THAN 50 PTS AND THEY ALL HANDLED IT LIKE MEN AND WERE NEVER TREATED THE WAY WINDHAM TREATED THEM. THERE WAS WRONGDOING ON WINDHAMS FANS. WHERE WERE YOU? AT HOME WATCHING OHIO STATE? GOOD DECISION BY JFK....THEY WOULD NEVER TREAT PEOPLE, PLAYERS THE WHY WINDHAM DID ON OR OFF THE COURT. THUMBS UP TO THE JFK COACH FOR PROTECTING THOSE CHILDREN. SHAME ON WINDHAM FOR TREATING ANYONE THE WAY SEEN LAST NIGHT!!!

Anyone who has ever spent three minutes in Windham can pretty much figure this one out.

As a matter of fact I was there. We're you? I didn't see any Windham harassing the referees during the game. I didn't see any Windham fans walk onto the court to berate the Refs. I didn't see any Windham fans grab a Refs arm on the court. When the supposed near brawl took place, not ont Windham player from the bench went in to the court. As for the Windham fans, I am sure some things were said and they were directed to the JFK coaches not the players. 4 Technical fouls on the JFK bench, tells you the mood of the coaches and who was being obnoxious. The Refs left because they feared for their safety from the JFK fans that walked on to the court. As an adult, you should know there are boundaries and the court is one of them. It was a sad night and it was not handle well by the JFK staff or the fans that went onto the court.

If I were from JFK, I think I would be better off to just lay low and not draw any more press coverage at this time.Take care of your own community before insinuating that Windham isn't a desirable place to spend 3 minutes.

I believe JFK action were childesh, and I have supported JFK for years. How sad the coaches made this decision, I believe JFK needs to look deep into theirselves and ask why the girls BB team had so many problems this year and why the boys are showing some concerns as well, maybe its time to stop putting alumni in the coaching realms and start hiring people who have a love for the game.

JFK...never liked the school, never will. Especially since they turn a blind eye to child abuse. What's also funny is...their sports teams (football) like to impose their will on others. But when the same is done to them....whaaaaa!!! They cry like a baby.

Yoursowrong - as a matter of fact, the Ref that was grabbed by a JFK fan, ordered him removed before the Refs were escorted off the court for their safety. I am sure that is why the refused to come back to the court. The JFK JV got a Technical during the JV game. So he was angry before the Varsity game ever started.

I am sure both schools have film of this game. Hopefully a film of this game is submitted to OHSAA officials for review. The JFK coaches are way off base saying they feared for their players safety. I guess you have to say something to cover up the terrible decision to pull your team off of the court. The JFK players played hard. The Windham boys played hard as well. The Windham administration would never allow threatening behavior towards the opposition. Now to my real point. JFK leave the Cleveland Catholic League. Join Windham, Mogadore, Rootstown, Waterloo and Jackson Milton in a new League. This is such a logical thing to do. All schools have such a loyal fan base and the makings of great rivalries.

I have only seen the JFK boys team a couple of times. But each time I came away with the same opinion - Pompelia is a crybaby! That attitude resonates throughout his coaching staff AND players. I mentioned that one other time and got lambasted by some of their elitist alumni. "larryd", well said! JFK's "holier than thou" thinking MUST change if they are ever to get past the trauma that has befallen this institution!

Bomber, JFK would have wanted to join a conferance closer to them, but they could never get voted in, I hope all Private schools join the Catholic League and put a end to these constant complainers, regarding recruiting ect, Now that most public schools have open enrollment lets see how the will or are using it today.

MRRJytown, Windham fans for the most part want nothing to do with the league we are going to. This is not a good fit. In basketball, like Kennedy, we play schools with 3 to 4 times the enrollment of ours. In that regard I do respect Kennedy as they are doing the same. I heard Covelli is buying Kennedy out of the League contract. If this is correct Kennedy needs to find the ideal fit. That ideal fit is in the same league with Windham and Mogadore. All three school have that blue collar work ethic and expect to win and compete against anyone they play.

What an embarrassment for everyone involved especially the officials who showed nothing but complete incompetence, gross negligence and serious lack of leadership and control of the players, fans and atmosphere. I give the JFK coach credit for having the foresight and balls to send his players into the lockerroom until order was restored. Safety first. 2 JFK players suffered head injuries and nothing was done by the officials. They didn't stop play and never even inquired as to their health and safety. This debacle falls solely on the officials for letting this get out of control. They should be reprimanded and reduced to doing freshman girls games at best! Racial slurs, objects being thrown, fights almost breaking out...get some control of the situation Refs.

JFK players suffered head injuries after they fouled windham players on layups and fell. And it wasn't even an injury, Naples hit his head on the wall after Taylor had an and one layup an then he got up and continued playing. Not so much an injury. Jfks student section was grabbing and pushing Matt Knight when he saved a ball and fell into their student section. JFK fans came onto the court and were harassing the referees. Which led to the refs to go into the locker room and not finish the remainder of the game.

Yesterday.. Common now. The Taylor boy from Windham shot two breakaway layups only to get absolutly clobbered by two different JFK kids. One JFK kid got hurt after he hammered Taylor going to the hoop. This should have been an intentional flagrant foul. It was not ruled that way. The JFK kid hurt himself trying to hurt the Taylor boy. You need to look at the film my friend. JFK school officials need to look at the film as well. Coaches are athletic educators. What are you teaching these student athletes? Just a shame.

Ok "Bomber". Gee I wonder who u support. Lol. I have no dog in this fight. That's all fine and good and I agree with ur assessment. But again that's the fault of the officials for not calling an intentional foul and handling the situation better. I agree. But to not even check on an injured player for whatever reason is negligent. He shouldve checked on both kids. Furthermore nobody even separated the kids except the kids themselves while the crew discussed how to handle things during the scuffle. All of this could have been avoided with some competent officiating. Everyone shares blame but officials most of all.

Yesterday, I agree the officials should have called a better game but your coaching staff was way out of line. Your JV coach set the tone during that game getting a techical and constantly badgering the officials. That carried over to the Varsity game as all of your coaches constantly badgered the officials then top it off with a JFK parent grabbing the official. Finally your AD comes out onto the court to talk to the official during the game. I have never seen anything like it. I feel bad for your student athletes. I really do.

(1of2)And people wonder what's wrong with high school sports these days. What's childish are the comments being made about the Kennedy coaches and players. The coaches did what they believed was best for their players. These coaches care about their players more than winning and losing..so it’s considered childish? You bring up the abuse that was done at Kennedy in reference to a basketball game, really?I am sure those victims appreciate you bringing up their horrible experience in reference to a basketball game. The first comment that the Windham coach made,'we were up by 40', had no relevance to what was taking place. The score had nothing to do with the events that transpired. Kennedy has lost to better teams by more, so for anyone to insinuate that, is absurd. The fact racial slurs were made shows the ignorance that transpired at the game last night.

(2of2) What most of you fail to realize is that, these coaches and players are human, they are not perfect and most have families that attend these games, some of which consist of young children. They have to hear their dads, brothers or sons being berated and called names, because of a HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAME, that is childish !. You want to educate those kids, well it STARTS AT HOME!

First of all you can not blame everything on the officials. The fouls were identical the first half with Jfk having 9 and Windham having 8. If it wasnt for the 5 technical fouls on Jfk it would have been closer! 3 of the 5 technicals called on Jfk were on the coaches. Just goes to show what kind of influence their coaching staff is. They had no control over there players and set a very bad example along with some of the parents who walked onto the court and harassed the referees. And the so called "brawl" at the end of the game was a minor pushing match that was quickly broken up. Not one Windham player left the bench while 2 Jfk players ran onto the court. It just goes to show you how much class Jfk has.

Funny but the ref who called the technical in the jv game apologized to the coach for getting the call wrong even though it lead to 5 very influential points.

Yesterday, Lol. No matter what I say your going to have a conflicting story. I accept that. I have been around the game of basketball for over 30 years and never seen the likes of what happened to end the game last night. Grown men, most of who probably never amounted to beans as players reliving their childhood as a coach trying to verbally bully there way in hopes to get a call from an official. Mommy look at me now I am a coach with authority!Where was the JFK administration? Windham had the Superintendant, High School principle, AD all attend the game as they do every game. These administrators would never allow coaches, players, fans or students ever to be disrespectful. Our student section is monitored so closely its not even funny.
