Cigarette butts, they are everwhere

January 27, 2013

DEAR EDITOR: When was the last time you were outside in a public area and have not noticed a cigarette butt? Cigarette companies started putting filters on cigarettes years ago....

Hmmmm....I worry more about empty beer cans tossed out of cars.

That said, I think the fast food industry contributes more to pollution than cigarette butts.....how about a big, fat tax on fast food cups, containers and wrappers?

Iam a smoker, but a considerate smoker. Don't stereotype. I detest butts in my yard so therefore I do not do it anywhere else. If I am in a public place with no ashtrays I put it out and take it to a trash can. You holier than thou non smokers kill me. And there's nothing worse than a former smoker. Again, don't stereotype. There's alot of bad habits out there other than smoking.

My God! Living with this guy must be a joy! Oh the horror of it all!!! Ciggy butts everywhere!!!I don't smoke, because i have enough other bad habits, but please calm down sir!!You are so outraged about discarded ciggs out side the PO,that you were spurred to write an Editorial about it,for the local paper??There is a list of social ills that needs to be addressed long before we get to your butt phobia.I get the feeling you hear the words "BUTT OUT" quite often. You must wear a mask, hide in the dark and utter the words...I'm Butt Man!

Mr. Lawson, your analogy about animals leaving droppings is very accurate. Smokers are animals. They are a very low life form. Smokers care nothing about the world they live in or others. If they did they would not pollute the air, their own bodies, or the bodies of others the way they do. Several cities have banned smoking in their downtown areas because of this very issue. Smokers walk around with nicotine stained fingers, dingy stained teeth, horrendous breath, wrinkly skin, watery eyes, smelly clothes (houses and cars), and a host of medical issues (COPD, asthma, high blood pressure, cancer, etc., etc.) and could not care less. Why in the world do we think they'd care about making such a mess of the public areas we all have to share. Don't get mad at the cigarette companies. Without low intelligence idiots who keep them in business by buying their products, they and their dirty little butts, would disappear.

Cellulose acetate takes from 1 year to 10 years to break down depending on the environmental conditions. There are trillions of butts disposed on the ground every year.

I agree with know it all. There are a lot more ugly things to look at around here than cigarette butts. This is the same guy that wants the government to take our guns. Maybe he should suggest a new tax and government department of homeland butt patrol. Or he could walk around dressed like Capitan Hook and pick up these butts that he seems overly obsessed with. We could call him..............?

I am a (very recent) ex smoker but when I was smoking, I bought an ashtray for my car. It cost a whole buck at the Dollar G. I used the ashtray if I had to smoke outdoors and I have not been to a single business that did not have an ashtray nearby. Just because you may have to walk 3 or 4 steps to get to it does not mean you should just throw it on the ground. If that is what EarlyRiser is doing than not only is he smelly but he is also lazy. This is the type of person that got smokers rights taken away in the first place. People who have no consideration for those who don't smoke. People who think butt mulch will eventually catch on... (it won't).

BUT

Please just quit. We are watching someone we love die a horrible death because of smoking. He isn't even 50.

I think butts are way down on the eyesore list. People posting here seem to have another agenda since I don't recall letters about people that cut their grass less than once a week, have never replaced mulch or put it in to begin with, that have cars in the drive way and not the garage, that do car repairs at home, that haven't replaced their 20 year old siding, that park on the street, or any of the 100's of other things that look worse than butts.

If it took that long for butts to rot wouldn't we be knee deep in them? Wouldn't there be mountains of butts at landfills? Throw one on your yard and try to find it in a year.

See the difference kids? Raven respects the community and has integrity. Earlyriser is just that typical crybaby saying its someone else's fault. What a great example of why Trumbull county looks like a dump. Thanks for clarifying the point...such a joke. Looks like Raven "dealt" with it eh earlyriser??

Before non smokers took away all of our rights butts went into ashtrays, when non smokers took away our rights business took away outside ashtrays. Since this is what you non smokers wanted (us smoking outside) deal with it.
