David1... Obviously you have difficulty comprehending normal thinking. Nobody here is trying to get anything off there chest. The comment by Soul was made to make a point of the difficulty in coming forward. You know, it is people like you that make it that way. Maybe you should have a little compassion for the victims. You are not the one to judge whether or not they have been victimized or not, thats on them not you.

David1 I understood Soul's posts to be an effort to help people understand why it's difficult for CHILDREN (yes, 14 year olds are children)to report sexual abuse by sharing her personal experience. I also notice that being in her fifties, she hardly shared her "life story!" I don't know who ****** in your Wheaties and made you such a miserable person, but I do know for you to comprehend a simple post it needs to be dumbed down. Let me help you: 1. Pedophiles (that's a big word for people who sexually abuse KIDS) screw their minds up while they're screwing with their bodies. 2. Telling someone you're being abusedis scary and difficult, and KIDS are already coping with more than they can handle. 3. Her son (a KID) was possibly a victim of this pedophile. Hope this helps clear up your confusion. I guess you would have been comfortable walking around your high school for four years with all your peers knowing you had your junk fondled and backside violated?!

Just to be clear, in my last post I was referring to victims of abuse and people of the Catholic faith as being wrongly judged by people lacking compassion and reason, NOT implying that all Catholics are responsible for the actions of sick individuals. I'm not Catholic, but I only hold individuals accountable for their actions, whether it be the abuser or the individuals within a group who decide to further the abuse by sheltering the pedophiles.

So sorry to read of your ordeal and that of your son, it makes me angry and confirms my belief that any creep molesting a child or raping anyone deserves to be tortured slowly & killed. If for no other reason than to injure the offending party I urge you to sue. Of course it won't change the past, but public shame, scorn, and loss of money goes a long way towards punishment...

I failed to mention in my prior post that I am a woman and I'm now 54 years old. I will add that six months after my happy, healthy, athletic, compassionate son entered JFK as a freshman, got on the football team, ran track and cross country, had daily interactions with Brother Steve both as his religion teacher and athletic son attempted suicide. It was by the Grace of God that someone found him in time to get him to the hospital, and he lived. He had never had discipline problems, emotional problems, no trouble fitting in, never did drugs of any kind, was a son I was so proud to have and a friend who could always be counted on. You'll likely hear about the outcome soon, not here and not today. Suffice it to say there is not a happy ending. To the people who throw out nasty and negative remarks about the victims and Catholics all I can say is your judgement day is coming just as it is for the rest of I pray you find your compassion and brains in time.

I was sexually abused by a man from the time I was in 2nd grade until I was in 7th grade. It took ONE TIME, the FIRST TIME to instill GUILT, FEAR, SHAME,& RESPONSIBILITY to ME. When he wasn't touching me he was the closest thing to a father I'd ever had. He was kind, brilliant, successful, and generous. And I loved him. How does a second grader sort that mix of emotions out?! I never could. And I never told anyone until he had been gone from my family for several years and I was I was 17. I told my mother, and guess what! The pervert was right, she got angry and didn't believe me. The subject was closed. I never told anyone again until I was in counseling at the age of 30. In the years he was doing this I felt disgusted with myself! I was afraid someone would find out and know that I was dirty. When I finally told my mother I vomited before I actually went to her, just because of the fear and disgust. COMING FORWARD IS AS HARD AS THE ABUSE

NMC, agreed. Judging all Catholics, or all religious, by the warped actions of this individual is like judging all blacks by the actions of Danny Lee Hill.

In regards to your question of why you only hear of pedophile priests going after boys, I don't know, but similarly, whenever you hear of a pedophile teacher or coach going after an underage victim, it tends to be man-on-boy. I don't know why, but my point is, it's absolutely not limited to those in the religious orders. As I said before, when I went to Salem High School, a teacher--a non-Catholic teacher, by the way--was molesting boys. He was quietly let go and nothing came of it until years later when some of the boys (then no longer boys) came forward.

You can say whatever you want but the bottom line is dont make this guy a hero for joking around about it and not report it to the cops. He told his buddys they all thought it was thete is nothing the cops can do and he wants a payday. Dpnt condone his behave so you can have closure to your prpblems. If your going to do it dp it right

What a bunch of apologists! If this creep had molested girls it would be a different story. Too bad your offerings have to pay for these pigs. I hope the victims get every dime they can from this criminal!!!!

I believe david has it right; the number of people coming forward now, all of a sudden, makes one wonder if money is the motivator. It takes away from those have truly been the victims of this moral decay.

I do understand why a teenager might be ashamed to tell someone that Bro Steve was fondling or molesting him. (1) who'd believe it, (2) what will the guys say? So many guys can't be lying, furthermore I know adults who have spent their lives coaching & mentoring teens and have never been accused of pedophilia. It's true and Catholics need to accept it, but can anyone explain why it's always Priest on boy and not Priest on girl?

I believe folks would be angry but sympathetic if these creeps were chasing girls, however they're only chasing boys!!!

Yeah Bear, I certainly know what it feels like to have an entire group you're associated with judged & discriminated against because of behavior of a few idiots in the bunch. I said it was unfair then and it's unfair now, I regret my participation in it. I agree there are many decent, devout sincere Catholics, it would be nice to have that acknowledgement made about every group attacked in this manner, agreed?

Also, the statute of limitations in Ohio prevents victims from having their day in court and therefore the predator get not exposed and is still a danger to children. The bishop sure did not make Baker public.

Also keep in mind your silence only hurts, and by speaking up there is a chance for healing, exposing the truth, and therefore protecting others.

At a party, the predator isn't some oddball sitting alone in a corner because others feel uncomfortable with him. Most often, the predator is the guy throwing the party.

We must overcome the dangerous myth that because someone is successful or warm or caring, he or she couldn't have done that! Also, we must stop thinking that because a man is old, that somehow he's automatically safe. It's just irresponsible to endanger kids by assuming an adult is harmless simply because he or she may be losing hair, wearing glasses, using hearing aids or walking with a cane. These can be signs of advancing age, but they are not signs that an individual is safe around kids.

It is extremely rare that a child predator has only one or two victims. some have many. Hopefully anyone who has knowledge or may have been harmed by Brother Stephen Baker, will have the courage to come forward and contact the "police", not the church officials.

To all those hurtful comments posted:

These brave victims are to be commended for speaking up and taking action to expose the truth. This is not an easy thing to do but there is something to keep in mind:

Child predators are very cunning and manipulative. They know every trick on how to groom, threaten, lie, and put the fear of god into their victims and sometimes even their family members. They also appear to do a lot of good things, they can be very charismatic and you may think they would never harm a child. They have to be this way, in order to not get caught and to continue to abuse

Sexual predators are often powerful and well-loved. It would be comforting if those who preyed on the vulnerable were obvious social misfits whose appearance would somehow set off alarm bells and give us the willies or the creeps. They rarely do. Usually, predators are among the last people we would suspect of sexually violating others.

Michael Munno is to be commended for having the courage to speak up about being abused. This is not an easy thing to do. So let's hope that anyone who has knowledge or may have been harmed by Bro Baker, will come forward and contact law enforcement, not the church officials, no matter how long ago the abuse happened The church officials are not the proper officials to be investigating child sex crimes. Well said jot. These crimes happened over 20 years ago. Today is a completely different time, a completely different generation. Posters claiming that this is going on right now, today, all through the Catholic church, but having no facts whatsoever to back up those accusation, they just "know" it's going on, are ignorant, bigoted and prejudiced.

Same with those who claim the Catholic church is "a breeding ground for pedophiles," but with no facts to back up that accusation. Fact: Statistically, there are no more pedophiles in the Catholic church than in any other organized religion, profession or organization. However, the media sensationalizes those that are caught much more than those in any other group. And the local KKK people gladly eat it up, as you can tell by the many ignorant anti-Catholic posts.

"They're trained to show deference to religious authority," Hoatson, a former Roman Catholic priest, said.

Please make that past tense. As a teacher (public school)and a parent (Catholic school) and a Catholic (proud of it) my children have been taught that your body and personal space is yours and yours alone. If ANYBODY makes you uncomfortable, touches you in a way that makes you uncomfortable, or in general gives you a creepy feeling...tell us. Immediately. Nobody gets deference...priests, doctors, teachers, other students...absolutely no one gets deference.

Money money,money.......this is a slap in the face to true victims of sexual abuse who dont think its funny when it happens, who report the crime so the perv goes to jail rather than the money goes in ur pocket. This spells out more people not believing storys of real victims because of this dude making a circus out of it......great job and sleep well Munni.
