Sounds great. I totally want a car that uses a gas that's usually around 10-50 cents more than premium at the pump.

Sounds great. I just want to see some specs on the engine. About all they've really said to describe it is that it's 'clean'.

Of course it's clean, it's got to meet US emissions standards. How's it perform? How's it perform compared to the VW TDI?

Comparsion: The VW Passet diesel TDI is the winning family diesel, Approx 45 mpg-back seat room is spacious and the trunk is extremely large, my kids turned down the Cruze because of the small back area.

GM with another copycat idea. A day late and billions of dollars short as usual. Prediction: This will impact the TDI offering from VW by 06%, or in straight metrics the 7 or 8 of these they sell.

So by clean diesel, is this the same diesel currently sold at gas stations, or is this a different diesel? As pahootaman said, you are gonna pay significantly more per gallon, and it starts at $23k, whereas the gasoline version starts at $17k. What a deal. I can recoup my costs if I have it for 10 years, or drive 100k miles per year.

Rollo. It's the same old diesel you get at the pump. They just have some injection and timing tricks to burn the fuel better improving emissions as well as some technology to make it less problematic like the old diesels.

GM will do good with this if they make a good engine. Diesel should be much cheaper than gasoline due to lower processing costs. It isn't because of scale and demand issues, that will improve if more are put on the road and the Big Oil allows it.

I have a feeling though that the oil companies are pretty comfortable with an absolute minimum price per gallon and they're not going lower than that now matter what. If there's an over supply they'll just lower production.

Big Oil learned something the past couple decades about the perceived price ceiling and they are much happier now.

This thing is DOA. Why oh why would I pay what will be a $2,000-$3,000 premium in purchase price to get the SAME mileage as the gasoline ECO version and have to pay $.70 more per gallon for diesel over regular? INSANE! Hope the dealers have laid in a lot of ketchup and salt cause' they are gonna eat everyone of these dogs that are shoved down their throats. I see GM is back to their stupid ways.

America is a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of the world who loves diesels.

Nosympathy, do you think the US is the only market GM competes in? Do you think it's the biggest and most important?

Never summer, wow, you must some kind of genius or something. Other nations don't tax diesel as a premium fuel unlike here in the States where we do. Where that is not the case is where GM can sell this car successfully. But, not here. And that was my point. What they should be selling is a small pickup and van with this engine. That would sell and sell well here.

Article seems like a GM fluff piece. "Cruze Eco, with a standard six-speed manual transmission, is the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in America..." isn't true. Google for "Top 10 Most Efficient Non-Hybrid 2013 Cars (By Combined Mileage)" (w/o quotes).

One can confirm this by going to ***********fueleconomy.gov/feg/powerSearch.jsp and searching for gasoline powered vehicles that get 30 or 35 mpg or higher for combined mileage.
