The art of neighboring: Boomers helping seniors

Bristol resident Don Heiens says society has lost the art of being a neighbor. After serving in Vietnam, he spent most of his adult life managing others as a supervisor in the injection molding field. Retiring at age 62, he decided he wanted to help, somehow. And that’s when he saw an ad seeking drivers to deliver meals for Country Neighbor out of Orwell. “I like to help people, and I like to drive. This gives me the opportunity to do it and provide a service,” Heiens said. “It allows me to feel I’m contributing in society, something I didn’t have a chance to do when I was working full-time. It’s a shared feeling among drivers whether working for Country Neighbor, Trumbull County Office of Elderly Affairs and the 650 volunteer drivers for Trumbull Mobile Meals.
