Orchids and Onions
ORCHID: To Warren Township trustees for holding the line on the taxpayer money it provides to the Warren Township Volunteer Firemen’s Association. The association is in danger of disbanding without the contract. The township would then depend on mutual aid from neighboring communities. Trustees should sign a contract with a neighboring department if it saves taxpayers money. In all likelihood, a larger coalition would increase safety as well as save money. ORCHID: To the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office, especially Chief Deputy Ernest Cook III, for pushing forward with the Northeast Ohio Regional Integrated Justice Information System. The system would put 44 police departments over three counties on the same reporting system so that they could better share information and better communicate with each other. ONION: To Newton Falls City Council and City Manager Jack Haney for the $5 license plate tax that will continue even though the reason for passing the tax no longer exists.
