Salaried worker is sacrificial lamb
DEAR EDITOR: A few years after I began a career at Delphi Packard Electric I was laid off. I had just completed building a house and was finishing up my BS degree at YSU. I also had a young child and, I didn’t know it at the time, but another one on the way. The day I left my technician job at Delphi Packard a salaried engineer told me, don’t worry, there’s a lot of good people at Packard. Eventually they’ll do the right thing. In a few months I was called back to work, on a conveyor line. So much for a college degree. Eventually, like the salaried engineer had told me a few years before, I was able to land a job in engineering at Packard. Now I’m not so sure that was the right thing. Now I’ve lost a good portion of my 401(k) because I invested in the company I worked for, the company I believed in. I’ve lost all my health benefits and now I stand to lose more than 50 percent of my pension. Looking back, maybe I should have studied bankruptcy law in college.
