Nearly every public, private, parochial and charter school in Trumbull County participates in the Tribune Chronicle’s Newspaper In Education/Literacy program (NIE). The Ohio Department of Education encourages the use of newspapers in classrooms and has approved them as supplemental text. Writing, language arts, reading and math form the foundation of lifelong learning and critical thinking skills essential for future success.
Our NIE program has many ideas to share about how to use the newspaper in K-12 classrooms as well as adult literacy programs. Younger students can find the numerals 1-10 , cut them out and put them in sequential order. High school teachers use the Tribune Chronicle as a living textbook to teach their current events, government and civics classes.
Each Monday the Tribune Chronicle features the Mini-Page and Once Upon a Tale for our younger readers. Our nationally recognized award winning teen section, Page One, also appears weekly in our Monday edition.
Educators interested in ordering copies of the Tribune Chronicle for their classrooms can call our offices for additional information. Newspapers are available for the education rate of 17 ½ cents per copy.
The Tribune Chronicle’s NIE program is supported by civic-minded companies such as EMBARQ and the Cafaro Corporation, civic groups such as the Warren Rotary Club, and private donations from our subscribers. These donations allow us to offer a significant amount of newspapers to participating schools at little or no cost. New sponsors are always needed. Please call our offices for additional information.
The Tribune Chronicle offers educational tours of our office and plant. The tours, which last approximately one hour, are conducted weekdays during regular business hours. To schedule a tour, call our offices.
