Scrappers get few clutch hits
NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ pitching certainly wasn’t an issue Wednesday night as three Scrappers’ pitchers combined to give up just four hits and two runs. Unfortunately for the Scrappers, the hitting wasn’t up to the task as they only mustered one run in a 2-1 loss to the Williamsport Crosscutters. Mahoning Valley manager Travis Fryman said situational hitting was the main issue for his club as they stranded eight runners. “We didn’t string any hits together,” he said of the Scrappers’ six hits. “They were spread throughout. We had a runner on third with less than two outs and didn’t score, then we had a (leadoff) double and didn’t score. In one-run ball games that’s usually what hurts you.” Williamsport jumped out to an early advantage as Jeremy Barnes ripped a one-out ground-rule double into the Scrappers bullpen to score Leandro Castro in the top of the first inning to put the Crosscutters on top, 1-0.
