YSU seniors set to finish careers
YOUNGSTOWN — When Youngstown State football coach Jon Heacock remembers the 16 seniors on the 2008 Penguins, his first recollection won’t be the difficult year YSU has endured this season. Heacock said he will recall the two Gateway Conference titles they were a part of in 2005 and 2006. He’ll remember the Penguins’ run to the national semifinals in ’06 and the two home playoff victories, including a miraculous come-from-behind win over James Madison in which YSU trailed 31-20 in the fourth quarter. Those are the times that will stick out for Heacock — not this year, which YSU (3-8, 2-5 Missouri Valley Conference) will wrap up at 2 p.m. Saturday at Western Illinois (6-4, 4-3). “They’re going out of here with a couple of championship rings, they played on ESPN and had some pretty neat opportunities,” Heacock said. “This group, for the most part, has had a lot of success since they’ve been here. They’ve had a lot of good times.
