Promise on levy for police, fire was a lie

November 16, 2008

DEAR EDITOR: The citizens of Warren have been lied to. My husband and I were celebrating last year when the news came that the permanent tax levy was passed by the citizens of Warren to support the police and Firefighters. Threatened layoffs helped to convince the people of Warren to vote ‘‘yes’’ so that their safety was secure. My husband and I were especially grateful because we were expecting our first child together. What a relief it was to know my husband’s job was secured because of this permanent tax. We were happy with the support the citizens gave the police and firefighters. Now here we are a year later, and guess what? The city has managed to mess up the budget and cuts have to be made. Yes, it is looking inevitable that layoffs are coming, and, yes, police and fire are going to suffer from the huge deficit in the General Fund. What fine planning we have here in Warren.
