Rebel Elite mentors guide youth
WARREN — A local man who suffered the loss of a son has reached out to other area youth, creating a program that he said offers mentoring, tutoring and recreation. Kevin Watson, program coordinator of the Warren Runnin’ Rebels Elite, said his 16-year-old son was shot and killed five years ago in Warren. Afterward, he decided to try to help keep local children off the streets. In the program, students get exercise through athletics and also have mentors who help them with schoolwork, he said. “We talk to and mentor the kids and try to help them when the parents ask us for help when the kids are having problems,” Watson said. Watson said there has been a positive response from the parents about the program, with many commenting on how well-behaved the students are at events. The program schedule begins with homework, followed by a mentoring session and then practice for basketball tournaments. Money raised through fundraising covers costs for basketball uniform.
