Eating to Live!

Eat your greensTue, June 23, 2009 @ 4:50PM I have been talking for weeks about the benefit of eating greens, particularly since my little greenhouse garden was such a success this spring. Not only did I get fresh and lettuce and spinach well ahead of my outdoor garden, but the one row of beets I planted provided enough greens and deep, red globes to keep me in fresh greens for weeks to come. My southern friends laugh at my excitement. “We don’t throw away any greens we can get our hands on,” Florida gardener friend said in an e-mail. I admit that I am a novice when it comes to eating beet greens. Although I’ve grown beets in my garden for many years, I’ve only used the root part and tossed the greens on the compost heap. That isn’t likely to happen again now that I’ve gotten a taste of them. My husband, who does most of the cooking in our house since he retired, finds ways to put them in my food.

Odds and EndsWed, July 1, 2009 @ 2:08PM Some musings as I return from a refreshing 10 days off: -- It was hard to miss just before I went on vacation the message Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams was sending when he said to a group of reporters that he is monitoring financial information daily as he seeks concessions from city patrol officers to try and battle a budget deficit. The message he sent was that he is not only looking at this year, but two or three years down the road in dealing with financial matters. That the future needs watching is something that needed to be done in Warren, where they may be a scandalous lack of police officers if they do not reach concessions there. The one thing, however, that works against the mayor is if nothing in the way of concessions or layoffs is done. Not that I want anyone laid off, but in 2008 when the mayor asked for concessions and no one was laid off, it has led some union members to say that they didn't do it then because they were bluffing.

Busy week at Star Lake starts ThursdayWed, June 17, 2009 @ 5:34PM The next seven days could be the busiest week in the 20-year history of Post-Gazette Pavilion at Star Lake in Burgettstown, Pa. Phish plays the amphitheater on its reunion tour on Thursday (June 18). The show sold out the first day tickets went on sale, so expect 23,000+ to make the trek to western Pennsylvania. Promoter/venue operator Live Nation is telling Phish phans they will not be allowed in the parking lot without a ticket. The lots will open at 3 p.m., and the gates and pavilion will open at 6 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. show. That will be followed by two nights of the Dave Matthews Band (and The Hold Steady) at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. DMB shows aren’t the immediate sell outs they used to be, but there should be at least 15,000 to 20,000 fans there each night. Staff will get a breather on Sunday and Monday. Good thing because they’ll need it with the flocks of Parrotheads descending on the venue Tuesday for Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band.

What's next?Wed, July 1, 2009 @ 5:56PM When players left the final minicamp to enjoy time away from football, coach Eric Mangini hoped that they wouldn't mellow out on a beach reading a book that had nothing to do with football strategy. He made a point of telling them that when they return for training camp at the end of July that things will be different. The easy-going ways of minicamps will give way to the intense competition of August practices. Mangini's departing words sent a direst message to players -- don't think training camp will be easy. He wants them to keep in shape and not drift too far away from the football world while enjoying the final weeks before the hard work begins. Mangini's approach is that this could be the only chance many players get to make a favorable impression. Take advantage of the situation by working hard in the offseason and realizing that opportunities in the NFL don't come up that often. Training camp doesn't start for another month (Au.

Witness Protection coming to ClevelandThu, June 25, 2009 @ 2:12AM The Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns weren't able to swing a trade to bring Shaquille O'Neal to Cleveland in February, but better late than never. Reports late Wednesday and early Thursday had the teams agreeing to a deal that had the Cavaliers sending Ben Wallace, Sasha Pavlovic, a second-round draft pick (No. 46 overall) and some cash to the Suns for O'Neal. The Cavaliers believe O'Neal might be the final piece of a championship puzzle. He is 37 now, but O'Neal can still dominate the middle. He averaged 17.8 points and 8.4 rebounds for Phoenix last season, but wasn't viewed as a good fit with the Suns, who were known for their breakneck pace before acquiring the 7-foot-1 center. O'Neal might be a better fit with the Cavaliers, who often walk the ball up the court despite having perhaps the best finisher in the NBA in LeBron James. But James was unable to singlehandedly get the Cavaliers past the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference finals last season.

Deaths make one feel agedWed, July 1, 2009 @ 3:46PM All of a sudden, I feel a little older. This past weekend I watched and read as familiar names continued to die. Ed McMahon was first. I grew up with him and his boisterous laugh. In my childhood, if you got to stay up late enough to watch Johnny Carson, it was an exceptional day. He's gone. Then came Farrah. I was one of those teen boys who admired her swimsuit poster. In the waning years she looked so tired, a stark contrast of how as a young lad I remember her. But poor Farrah's headlines were overshadowed by Michael Jackson. I wasn't a huge fan of his, but I admired his talent. I feel like I grew up with him. He was only four years older than me. Then came Billy Mays. He -- also 50 -- went to sleep and just didnt wake up. He looked healthy and vibrant. Ed and Farrah's funerals have come and gone. Michael's, we don't know. Mays' is Friday. It all makes me notice more of that gray hair when I look in the mirr.
