Eating to Live!

Springing forwardSun, March 14, 2010 @ 9:19AM I am looking forward to April. My father in law used to tell me “don’t wish your life away,” and while I know I should be working on today, I can’t help but think about what might be going on a month from now. The reason I’m excited about April is because some crops in the greenhouse garden will be ready for harvest and there is a good possibility I’m going to get asparagus this year. It’s been a long time since I’ve grown asparagus. I had a small plot many years ago, but when the husband and the kids wouldn’t go near asparagus with a 10-foot pole, I grew disappointed and gave it up. And then a couple of years ago, I decided so what if no one else will eat it but me? I like asparagus and I want to grow it. So I bought enough plants to get started and dug out a trench alongside the vegetable garden fence just for them.

Patrol presenceTue, March 9, 2010 @ 4:16PM Are things looking up for the Warren police department? The chronically short staffed department gets back a couple of officers recently and will have some patrol partners in the DEA and Adult Parole Authority when they start their Weed & Seed this spring. Additionally, this weekend's warrant sweep, even though it was countywide, made quite an impact in the city with over 50 people either being arrested or turning themselves in and paying their court costs (it reminds me of former YPD Chief Bob Bush, who was a big proponent of making arrests on small charges and traffic offenses. His reasoning was that most bad guys start off small and then either commit more serious crimes or are victims of more serious crimes themselves, so having them off the streets was a blessing. YPD executed the policy with such zeal, however, that it ultimately led to federal oversight of the Mahoning County Jail because of so many people being put inside).

Cleveland, Pittsburgh included on Lady Gaga TourMon, March 15, 2010 @ 1:31PM Lady Gaga announced a 31-city arena tour today that includes shows in Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The singer will perform July 14 at Quicken Loans Arena and Sept. 5 at what likely will be one of the first events at Pittsburgh’s new Consul Energy Center. Tickets for some dates on the tour go on sale Friday, but on-sale dates for Cleveland and Pittsburgh haven’t been announced yet. The press release announcing the tour includes this quote from Lady Gaga telling fans what to expect: "It's still called Monster Ball, but it's more of a musical and less of a concert," Lady Gaga said in a February interview with KIIS-FM’s Ryan Seacrest. "It has a New York theme, it's a story, and the story is that me and my friends are in New York and we're going to the Monster Ball, and we get los.

Taking a chanceFri, March 12, 2010 @ 12:37PM Former Browns safety Brodney Pool's decision to sign with the New York Jets is risky, to say the least. Pool, a second-round choice of the Browns in 2005, has had several concussions (at least four) that have limited his playing time. He finished last season on the injured reserve list after suffering a concussion. It's understandable on one level why Pool wants to continue playing. He was the youngest player selected in the '05 draft (he was 20 on draft day). He's played in five seasons and is just 25. He probably thinks he has a lot of football left to play. On another level it's confusing why Pool wants to go on. With so much talk about concussions of late, why would Pool want to risk further injury? Experts on head injuries say that once an athlete suffers one concussion, the chances of it happening again increase. When someone has suffered as many concussions as Pool has, it's almost a certainty that another one will occur.

Tough finish for RaidersMon, March 15, 2010 @ 2:41PM A couple of months ago, Warren G. Harding's boys basketball team looked like a lock for another district championship. The Raiders had just crushed Cleveland St. Ignatius in Warren, and the Wildcats -- by most accounts -- figured to be Harding's toughest foe in the Solon sectional-district. But then Raiders coach Steve Arnold had to dismiss point guard Fred Williams from the team. That was a key loss, but one Harding might have been able to overcome. Even though the Raiders lost twice in the final week of the regular season, the team had enough time to deal with Williams' absence down the stretch. What the Raiders were ultimately unable to overcome was the loss of Angel Gonzalez, their other team leader and returning starter from last season's state semifinal team. Gonzalez tore his ACL in practice a few days before a district semifinal against Garfield Heights. Harding was able to win that game in double-overtime even without Gonzalez, but when St.

More Community Stars namedWed, March 17, 2010 @ 2:12PM It was another beautiful banquet honoring a group of people who do so much for the community. The ninth annual banquet and awards ceremony sponsored by the Tribune Chronicle and the Trumbull-Mercer Chapter of the American Red Cross was held Tuesday evening. A dozen people were honored at th Packard Music Hall for going above and beyond the norm when it comes to helping their communities. I just want to give a personal congratulations to the people chosen as this year's Community Stars: James Noyes, Katie Watson, Ann and Jim Townley, Don Strock and David J. Kostalansky. Back row from left are Julie Vugrinovich, Earl Parthemer, Barbara Busko, Mary Busko, Ben Rhoads and Terrill Harvey. I have been to every banquet. It's always a wonderful event. At times, you can look around while someone is being honored and see someone in the audience discreetly wiping a little tear.
