Browns waive two
June 6, 2014 - Mike McLain
In a bit of a surprise, the Browns waived linebacker Quentin Groves Friday.
Also waived was former Ohio State linebacker Larry Grant.
Groves was signed as a free agent in 2013 after spending the previous season with the Arizona Cardinals. A 2008 second-round choice of the Jacksonville Jaguars out of Auburn, Groves appeared in fives games last season before being going on injured reserve with an ankle injury.
Groves, who spent two years with the Oakland Raiders after two seasons in Jacksonville, never developed as hoped in Arizona. He was favored by former Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton, who served in the same capacity for the Cardinals in 2012.
Grant, a five-year veteran, was signed May 21. Both he and Groves had been participating in the team's offseason training activity (OTA) practices.
The defense has stocked up on linebackers in recent seasons. Barkevious Mingo was selected sixth overall in the 2013 draft. Paul Kruger was added the same year in free agency, while Jabaal Sheard was moved from end to linebacker. Karlos Dansby was signed this offseason to replace D'Qwell Jackson at inside linebacker.
