Manziel the back up
May 12, 2014 - Mike McLain
Browns owner Jimmy Haslam made it clear during a speaking engagement in Canton Monday that quarterback Johnny Manziel is Brian Hoyer's backup as of now.
Haslam said that Manziel has been told to start acting like a backup. Although the competition in training camp will be open between Hoyer and Manziel, Hoyer will start off as the number one guy.
This all could and very well may change as August turns into September. If Manziel performs better in practice and in preseason games, it will be difficult for coach Mike Pettine to sit him when the regular season starts.
The Browns are handling the Manziel factor the right way. Throw a little humble pie his way and make sure he doesn't think it will be an easy ride to a starting job. It's also important to see exactly what the Browns have in Hoyer, who showed flashes of being a capable starter before suffering a season-ending knee injury in his third start last season.
The Browns have also cleared the way for Manziel and Hoyer to get most of the repetitions in camp by releasing Vince Young and Alex "Trick Shot" Tanney. The moves leave Manziel, Hoyer, Tyler Thigpen and rookie free agent Connor Shaw of South Carolina on the depth chart.
Shaw has the inside track for the third spot. Thigpen is a journeyman that has proven one thing -- he'll never be a starter. He'll be an extra camp arm when the wear and tear of summer practices begins to set in.
