Songs of Christmas: 'Christmas Is Coming'
December 10, 2013 - Andy Gray
Payolas are a largely forgotten early ‘80s band, one of those groups that flickered past on MTV without ever quite reaching even one-hit-wonder status. They’re Haircut 100 minus “Love Plus One.”
The band got some airplay for its 1982 album “No Stranger to Danger” with “Eyes of a Stranger,” which had a very Police vibe to it. It was featured in the movie “Valley Girl” and was a much bigger success in the band’s native Canada (I always assumed it was a British group until I just read a bio online).
The band’s 1983 follow-up, “Hammer on a Drum,” made even less of a ripple commercially, but buried there on side two is “Christmas Is Coming,” an anthemic little rocker about trying to get an ex to come back home over the holidays.
I always loved this song. It can be found on a couple of new wave Christmas compilations but, like the band that recorded it, most folks might not remember it. Click the link and give it a listen.
