Guessing game

September 16, 2013 - Mike McLain
CLEVELAND -- There's a decent chance that Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden will sit out Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings with a sprained right thumb, which would seem to indicate a start for Jason Campbell.

Things aren't always as they appear. Coach Rob Chudzinski threw a curveball at his Monday press conference when he said that either Campbell or Brian Hoyer could start if Weeden isn't able to play.

Hoyer was the third quarterback in the first two games, which meant he was technically inactive. Campbell played one series late in the fourth quarter of the 14-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Hoyer was the better of the two backups in preseason action, but Campbell got the nod as Weeden's backup based on more experience. That experience might not count much if Chudzinski is faced with a decision on a replacement.

Hoyer would be an easier sell to fans. Campbell is now a journeyman, looking to fill a backup role anywhere. Hoyer might not be starting material, but the fact he's never been given the chance Campbell has had would make him more appealing.

No matter which direction Chudzinski decides to follow, it's clear that the Browns' offense is in trouble. The passing attack has faltered, largely because of poor pass protection and a bad receiving corps. Chudzinski thought a healthy Trent Richardson would spark the running game, but that hasn't happened. Through two games Richardson has looked rather ordinary.

It couldn't be a worse start to Chudzinski's maiden voyage as a head coach. The offense was penalized three times for delay of game against the Ravens and was able to generate just two Billy Cundiff field goals.

Chudzinski is finding out what Pat Shurmur dealt with before him -- it's not easy winning in Cleveland.
