Sharon Jones diagnosed with cancer
June 3, 2013 - Andy Gray
One of my favorite bands is Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings with a horn-driven soul sound that is irresistible. And I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of “Give the People What They Want,” the band’s first album in three years.
This morning the Dap Kings’ publicist announced that the album’s August release has been delayed and all tour dates have been postponed because Jones has been diagnosed with stage-one bile duct cancer.
According to the statement, the cancer was caught early and has not spread, but the treatment is invasive and complex and requires a lengthy recovery period.
Jones says in the release, “Over the last few weeks I haven’t felt good and I didn’t know what was going on. We sadly had to cancel shows while I went through a series of tests and short hospital stays. We just found out that I have a stage-one tumor on my bile duct. Luckily we caught it really early and fast and the doctors say it’s operable and curable!
“I will be having surgery very soon and will have to rest and recover. I’ll be staying in touch and keeping my fans and friends updated on my progress. I’m looking forward to getting back on the road to give the people what they want!”
I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing Jones a couple of times. Not only is she a great interview, she’s a tough lady (she worked as a guard at Rikers Island prison and as an armored car guard before her singing career took off). I wouldn’t bet on cancer winning this fight.
