Grammy winner headlines Youngstown Jazz Fest

May 28, 2013 - Andy Gray
Grammy Award winner Kirk Whalum will headline this year’s Youngstown Jazz Fest.

The outdoor festival will run from 7 to 10:30 p.m. July 14 in downtown Youngstown’s Central Square.

Whalum, an 11-time Grammy nominee, won for Best Gospel Song for “It’s What I Do” (featuring Lalah Hathaway). His “Gospel According to Jazz” series has received international acclaim, and he has contributed to the film scores of “The Prince of Tides,” “Boyz N’ the Hood,” “The Bodyguard,” “Grand Canyon” and “Cousins.”

The sax player’s latest album, “Romance Language,” pays tribute to the jazz classic “John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman” and supplements the six tracks Coltrane and Hartman recorded in 1963 with romantic interpretations of some modern-day ballads.

Also performing at the Youngstown Jazz Fest will be the jazz/funk/soul band SounDoctine.

General admission tickets are $15 if purchased by June 7 and $20 after that date. VIP tickets will be $45. Additional information can be found at the festival’s website.
