Is Ken the man?

January 10, 2013 - Mike McLain
According to multiple reports, the Browns appear to be zeroing in on former Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt as their replacement for Pat Shurmur.

Whisenhunt is in Cleveland today for a second interview with owner James Haslam and CEO Joe Banner. That usually means the Browns are beyond the meet-and-greet stage and are getting down to contract details.

Whisenhunt was the beneficiary of having a great quarterback in Arizona in the 2008 season when Kurt Warner led the Cardinals to a 9-7 record in the regular season. The Cardinals advanced to the Super Bowl, losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Cardinals went 10-6 in 2009, but it's been all downhill since because of Warner's retirement. They were 5-11 in 2011 and 5-11 last season after a promising 4-0 start.

The Browns have been scrambling since deciding to no longer pursue Oregon coach Chip Kelly last weekend. They've conducted numerous interviews, most recently with Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman.

The plan is to secure a coach that will create a stir among the fan base. Whisenhunt might not do that, but at least he has a Super Bowl appearance to generate some excitement.

What the Browns really need is a stable situation at quarterback. No one knows that more than Whisenhunt, who struck gold with Warner.
