All YSU in the third quarter

September 1, 2012 - Dana Sulonen
I mean, I knew the Youngstown State University offense was good. And a fellow reporter kept telling me how good Penguin offensive coordinator Shane Montgomery is. And I believed both statements. But until the early third quarter on Saturday night did I become a true believer.

It’s no secret that YSU coach Eric Wolford doesn’t like to punt or kick field goals. So, the Penguins faced a fourth-and-1 around the 20-yard line. Everyone who knows Wolford knew he was going for it. But no one realized that he and Montgomery would pull the rabbit out of the hat to convert it.

Quarterback Kurt Hess tossed the ball back to Jamaine Cook, who then threw a 23-yard halfback pass to Will Shaw for the touchdown. It was a play of beauty.

The play left the Pitt fans and sidelines stunned. They were stunned yet again with 5 minutes left in the quarter when the YSU defense stopped a Pitt attempt to convert and fourth and 1. I actually heard boos in the crowd from Pitt fans.

YSU has dominated the third quarter. If Pitt doesn’t find some momentum and urgency, consider the Panthers a Week 1 upset.

Score at the end of the third quarter, YSU 21-10.
