Healing quickly

August 14, 2012 - Mike McLain
BEREA -- Reports of receiver Mohamed Massaquoi having suffered a concussion against the Detroit Lions weren't accurate.

The fourth-year Browns receiver participated in practice Tuesday in preparation for Thursday's preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. There's a chance Massaquoi might play.

Last Sunday coach Pat Shurmur said that Massaquoi had suffered a concussion and the team's medical staff was treating it that way. Massaquoi begged to differ with Shurmur, tweeting that he didn't have a concussion.

It appeared that Massaquoi might have had a concussion when he left the field following a hard hit by safety Erik Colemen on the first play of the game. The press-box spotter attending the game for the NFL ordered the medical staff to follow proper protocol when a head injury is a possibility. More concern may have been paid attention to Massaquoi because he has suffered two previous concussions.

Tuesday's practice was far from a thing of beauty for the offense. Quarterback Brandon Weeden was inconsistent on his throws. He wasn't helped by the receivers, who collectively dropped several passes.

Shurmur seemed upset after practice. He's been stressing the importance of catching the ball following a season in which the Browns led the NFL in dropped passes.

Massaquoi might not be the only injured player that will be ready to go Thursday. Defensive end Marcus Benard could play.

Shurmur announced that Colt McCoy will again be the first quarterback off the bench after Weeden gets in at least one half.

Defensive lineman Ronnie Cameron has been claimed off waivers. Coleman was signed as an undrafted rookie by the Chicago Bears last April. Shurmur said the Browns had an interest in Cameron before he signed with the Bears.
