Weeden will start
August 6, 2012 - Mike McLain
BEREA -- The worst-kept secret at training camp was solved Monday when coach Pat Shurmur named rookie Brandon Weeden the starting quarterback.
The decision doesn't just mean Weeden will start the rpeseason opener Friday in Detroit. Shurmur said there's no looking back, which means Weeden will get the call when the regular season opens Sept. 9 against the Phildaelphia Eagles.
Colt McCoy, last year's starter, was understandably disappointed. When asked if he would like to be traded, he didn't give a yes or no answer. McCoy expressed displeasure at not being given any time with the first unit.
It was obvious that Weeden would be the starter from the moment he was drafted 22nd overall in the draft last April. At 28 he needs to be on the field as soon as possible.
Weeden has taken all the snaps with the first team in the 10 practices conducted in camp. McCoy and Seneca Wallce have split time with the second team.
Shurmuru hasn't made a decision on Weeden's backup. He said that McCoy will likely be first off the bench against the Lions.
