Wrapping it up

May 13, 2012 - Mike McLain
BEREA -- The Browns finished their three-day minicamp Sunday with one short practice.

Coach Pat Shurmur was pleased to simply see rookies on the field during the offseason. Last year Shurmur, who was in his first yeas as a head coach, wasn't able to get anything accomplished in the offseason because of the owners' lockout.

"If you compare the middle of May this year to the middle of May last year, it’s night and day ahead of where we’re at,” Shurmur said. “It’s a normal teaching process this year with being able to work with players individually for awhile and then put them out here on the field.”

One thing stood out in the five practices conducted -- running back Trent Richardson and quarterback Brandon Weeden were impressive. It should be easy to look good in these types of settings, but not all quarterbacks do. Brady Quinn was a disaster on the practice field. Derek Anderson wasn't much better.

Weeden consistently put the ball into the hands of the receivers. His right arm is clearly up to NFL standards in terms of strength.

How Weeden performs when facing opposing defenses in the regular season remains to be seen. It's easy to complete almost every pass in May. Try doing it against the Baltimore Ravens in September.

You can see why Richardson was such a threat at Alabama. He hits the hole quickly, but what makes him special is his ability to cut away from trouble and get outside. His short stature (5-9) helps him keep a low profile to defenders.

One of Richardson's main assets wasn't on display during the camp -- blocking. His ability to pick uo blitzes and actually want to block will be Weeden's second biggest source of comfort next to having left tackle Joe Thomas on the field.
