Texting and driving

April 27, 2012 - Frank Robinson
While I hate to say it, something has to be done about texting while driving.

As motorcycle season comes back around, this issue is making me a nervous wreck (pardon the pun). It just seems to get worse every year. I don't mind it too much when I am in my large vehicle, but on the bike it's a different story.

According to the official U.S. DOT website, 37 states -- plus DC and Guam -- have banned texting behind the wheel. While I am against putting more government regulations in place for anything, I think it's time to implement texting rules the same way seat belt usage was rammed down our throats years ago.

It's a shame the government should have to tell people how to act responsibly. I see it all the time. It's usually the younger drivers, but some adults do it too. And, a lot of people text waiting for the light to turn green which usually prompts a blow of the car horn from behind for the driver to move along. That's frustrating, too.

Talking on the phone while driving is one thing. Texting is another. The latter needs to go.
