Warren's musical stars share `summit'

March 5, 2012 - Andy Gray
Two nights before they both won Grammy Awards, the "Sons of Warren" held a summit.

Foo Fighters frontman David Grohl, who was born in Warren in 1969, and dobro master Jerry Douglas, a Leavittsburg native and 1974 graduate of LaBrae High School, met at a MusiCares benefit honoring Paul McCartney on Feb. 11.

The Foo Fighters performed the Paul McCartney & Wings' hit "Jet" while Alison Krauss & Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas performed an acoustic version of "No More Lonely Nights" from the McCartney film "Give My Regards to Broad Street."

Douglas posted a photo of himself and Grohl on his Facebook page with the words, "Sons of Warren, Ohio, unite."

Douglas responded to a request to publish the photo and sent along an email detailing how the summit came about.

Grohl was walking past Douglas backstage as he was getting ready to start the show with "Jet."

"I looked at him and said, `Warren, Ohio,' and he looked at me and said, `You?' I said come back when you're finished and we'll talk," Douglas wrote.

After Douglas' performance with Union Station, the two chatted about Warren and how Grohl's grandfather worked for Republic Steel while Douglas' dad worked at Copperweld.

Grohl's family moved to Virginia a couple years after he was born. Douglas went on the road as a touring musician right after graduating from high school.

"Seems he moved to Springfield, Va., where I moved when I left Warren to live at the house of one of the guys in the band I was playing in there," Douglas wrote. "Turns out we were about 3 blocks apart at that point too. Small world, huh?"

The two musicians have more than 20 Grammy Awards between them, and both of their careers have been marked by collaborations with other musicians in different genres. That makes the last sentence in Douglas' email the most intriguing of all.

"I think our paths will cross again."
