Annoying window stickers

January 6, 2012 - Frank Robinson
Why is it the number of bumper stickers and window stickers saying "Stuck in Ohio" keeps increasing?

I see them on the back of perfectly good vehicles that I am sure get pretty good gas mileage. Since they are already rolling down the highway, why not just keep going? What's stopping them?

The stickers send a message that there is something wrong with this part of the world. It's a pessimistic outlook that I am sure carries on the through the bumper sticker owners' daily lives. That's a shame.

The other day I even saw a T-shirt with the "Stuck in Ohio" writing on it. That's when it dawned on me that the movement might just be a clever idea to make money and not so much a statement about society.

Anyway, I don't care for the message and wish it would go away. There might be the rare occasion when people are truly "Stuck in Ohio" due to some sort of personal reasons. However, I find it hard to believe, in this great, mobile society of ours, that anyone could be "stuck" anywhere for any extended period of time.

I am one that travels and lives all over the world but it gives me great pride in displaying my "Stuck In Ohio" stickers or wearing my shirts because I'm letting people know that I'm from Vienna, Ohio and that I'm proud of my friends. The movement isn't about being negative it's about the art and sports. The guys are true hometown heroes because they choose to be "Stuck In Ohio" not because it's bad but because it's good. I understand that an editorial is about having a pompous opinion about something that is supposed to strike a nerve or how else will you get someone to read your article, but how can you form an opinion and write about it when obviously there has been zero research done. Aren't you a journalist? So this isn't just an article with an opinion it's a prejudice against a movement that you definitely don't understand. I'm proud to be "Stuck In Ohio" even from the other side of the world.

C'mon Mr. Editor, eat your words and admit you are clueless about this issue and most other things you post! Another conservative at work for you! Run your mouth about things you know nothing about! Also explains a lot, instead of trying to find the positive in anything you would rather whine and complain and be negative, just like most conservatives I know.

Kudos to Dan and Ken for putting Vienna on the map and promoting the positive aspects of living in Ohio. Good ole Frankie needs to apologize and grant them a full interview so that those who don't understand "Stuck in Ohio" will finally get it. How about it Frank??

The slogan may appear negative to some, but the term "stuck in" is not only defined (in several dictionaries) as ""caught or fixed" or "trapped"--as editor Robinson understands it. The term is also defined (idiomatically) "to dedicate a large amount of effort towards." To "get stuck into" means "to perform (a task) with determination." Aside from the knowledge of the company with the name "Stuck in Ohio," the interpretation of the sticker depends on one's perspective.

Even though I think it is ridiculous to not research something that is clearly upsetting to you; I do have to agree that it is a negative slogan. For the many people like Frank that dont bother to find out who or what "stuck in Ohio" represents - it is just a negative impression that is forced into our consciousness. I don't like it. Irony aside, it's initial message is negative and frankly (lol) i'm sick of seeing it!

What is the shock here? People seem to be upset because Frank didn't spend 15 seconds to do some google research. Frank is a conservative and they fired the fact checkers years ago. He's part of the "we distort you decide" corporate media. Franks editorials belong on the comics page because the guy is a corporate clown.I salute the "Stuck in Ohio" crew for supporting our area!

Wow, I see an awful lot of new names on here that have never before been on the Trib comment forums. They all seem to be saying the exact same thing too, lol.

For an Editor to obviously not do any research be for publishing an article is horrible. As others have pointed out, even a simple internet search would have provided the accurate meaning of Stuck In Ohio. All Ken and Dan DO is promote Ohio extreme sports and riders. Their video edits are on par with anyone in the industry and they continue to showcase the talent of amateur and pro riders representing Ohio. I will proudly continue to adorn all my boards, PCs, and "perfectly good" cars and trucks with STUCK IN OHIO stickers. Perhaps a followup feature of all the Stuck boys are doing for Ohio would be appropriate.

I admit to being less concerned about any negative connotation dervied from the stickers than I am at what this says about the management at the Tribune. For an Editor of a newspaper to publish such a story with no research or background, even for an op/ed piece, makes me question the integrety of the newspaper as a whole. I sincerely hope the Editor responds to this error and explains how he managed to miss the top four search results on Google.

Honestly, it is very disappointing that the media is displaying vast negativity to such highly motivated individuals. It would be great to see more articles published, like those from earlier years, supporting Stuck In Ohio, because the message about the group is getting progressively negative. From the media educating individuals on the correct meaning of Stuck In Ohio, I think that this whole areas attitude could be altered into loving this state and what the group has tried to display, that is the passion for where these individuals are from and what this area has offered them. Personally, I feel that a message needs to be displayed to those who put down Stuck In Ohio, it is called freedom of expression. Individuals in this area should be much more concerned with the larger issues we have versus what is place onto someones car or wore on a shirt.

Dear, Frank. As a writer, you know research on one's topic is essential. Firstly, you can start by getting the correct facts from a Google search of "Stuck in Ohio" or from their website. However, it seems you lack the desire to research your piece, thus I will. Stuck In Ohio is a group of individuals working in video/film production, specializing in extreme sports such as snowboarding, skateboarding, wakeboarding and more. The name "Stuck in Ohio" is amplifying exactly where these individuals, and obviously many others, love to be. Ohio has much to offer, including the many talents displayed in numerous videos posted to the Stuck in Ohio YouTube page and their website. With many subscribers in the area, your main concern should be informing the public of correct information, not adding to the criticism. I will personally continue wearing the t-shirts and displaying stickers, as many others hopefully will, altering the negativity in which you represent.

It blows my mind that rather than take 30 seconds to Google something on the internet to find out about a topic. A "news" paper would slam a group of highly motivated young poeple. Maybe if you took the time to educate youself, you would find that they use stuck in Ohio as a term of endearment. The lack of geographical features like mountains and oceans in Ohio has no bearing on the skill set these individuals have acquired. I guess that alienating a younger audience is par for the course in the booming news paper industry. Oh, whats that? News papers are dying all across the country. Ok, nevermind. Perhaps the Tribune should run a story on this group. Inform the uninformed public of these guys story and that being stuck in Ohio is a good thing.

How does the editior of a major new publication write a blog and do no research whatsoever. I think your blind assesment does more harm then good. They are ambassadors for this crummy state. I am in fact stuck here. But if I have to be I wanna be stuck here with guys like these.

You poor thing Frank, it must have really upset you to the point you needed to post this article. Had you done ANY research on "Stuck in Ohio" (even a 3 second google search) you would've seen that this promotes Ohio, not the other way around. It seems the only person with the pessimistic view is you.

Editor:

The young men who are responsible for the "Stuck In Ohio" craze work very hard to promote our fine state. Their namesake is a mere tongue-in-cheek representation of the experiences of many in the skateboarding/BMX/snowboarding industry here in Ohio.

Instead of criticizing because of what you deem to be demeaning. A quick YouTube search will provide you with a relatively good explanation of just what "Stuck In Ohio" is but since you are obviously incapable of doing so, here's a link: ***********youtube****/user/stuckinohio please note the over 1.3 million views of their videos. How many subscribers does the Trib have? Instead of this unwarranted criticism of their logo, IMO, a feature article would seem appropriate.

Stuck in Ohio Productions is a company that the Tribune-Chronicle has covered--with pride. See this: ***********tribtoday****/page/content.detail/id/532804/Local-filmmakers-emerge-nominees-at-X-Dance.html

Brothers Dan and Ken Mizicko of Vienna are proud of their state. Take a look at their statement of purpose for Stuck in Ohio Productions at their website: ****stuckinohio****.

Some folks use irony as a form of empowerment. The Mizicko brothers take a term of derision from outsiders and employ it as a statement of pride--very much like the term "Rust Belt" is used by everyone as a negative descriptor but as a shorthand for action to revive the region. The Trib has also covered artists and others who explore the Rust Belt as a point of pride and dedication to the region.

Those that know nothing about the roots of "Stuck in Ohio" are the ones that think it is negative. "Stuck in Ohio" is the name of a local video production company started in a basement in Vienna, Ohio. The saying "Stuck in Ohio" is actually not a negative at all, if you knew the entire story ... I can understand initially why it could be perceived as being negative. I love Ohio and I'm "stuck" here cause I choose to be.

ummmm...its a sticker. LOL! you are disecting a sticker and trying to define the reason of each individual who decides to display it.

you're really going to go crazy when the 2012 sticker model starts emreging on the back of cars and on t-shirts. it says "trapped in ohio". 2013,s sticker was a choice between two, but "hog-tied in ohio" seems to be the choice. "nailed down in ohio" was going to cause possible problems with christian groups.

Regardless of it's usage, I agree that it is not painting a positive picture for this State and if you are one of those "Stuck in Ohio", then move on and don't let the door hit you in the behind on the way out.

Jan-07-12 5:41 AM

um, "Stuck in Ohio" is a skateboarding group. They are becoming more popular now.

Please do your research.
