It's over

January 1, 2012 - Mike McLain
CLEVELAND -- The Browns ended their 2011 season Sunday with a 13-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Browns Stadium.

The Steelers (12-4) advance to play the Denver Broncos in the first round of the playoffs. The Browns finished the season at 4-12.

It was a battle of field goals between Phil Dawson of the Browns and Shaun Suisham of the Steelers. Dawson put the Browns ahead 6-0 with a pair of second-quarter field goals covering 26 and 45 yards. Suishman kicked a 19-yard field goal on the final play of the first half and a 29-yarder in the third quarter to tie the score.

The Steelers got a big play when safety Troy Polamalu intercepted a Seneca Wallace pass intended for tight end Evan Moore at the Browns' 43 in the third quarter. The turnover led to a 7-yard touchdown run by Isaac Redman that gave the Steelers a 13-6 lead.

Dawson kicked a 49-yard field goal on the Browns' next possession.

The Browns weren't able to score points off of two Steelers' turnovers in the fourth quarter. Linebacker Chris Gocong forced a Redman fumble that was recovered by Eric Hagg at the Browns' 42. Cornerback Joe Haden forced and recovered another Redman fumble at the Browns' 39.

The Browns drove to the Steelers' 24 with five seconds remaining in the game. Wallace's pass for receiver Greg Little in the back of the end zone fell incomplete. Little was covered closely by Polamalu.

"It's not enough wins," Browns coach Pat Shurmur said of the 4-12 record. "I want this game to be the last game of the year where we're talking about other things about where we're playing our playoff game, who were playing against and those types of things. We've got to win some games, and I'm obviously not at peace with that. Now we'll get to the business of doing what we have to do to get our team as right as we can make it for next season."
