Obama and bin Laden's photo

May 5, 2011 - Frank Robinson
I have to say, I think President Obama was right.

The White House announced Wednesday it would not release a photo of Osama bin Laden's body. The decision was a good one. I can't think of a good reason to have released it. It's supposedly gruesome, and who really wants to see that?

I've been in the newspaper business for many years. During that time, I have been exposed to many gruesome photos from car wrecks, house fires, you name it. We never published the gruesome ones.

I'm fairly sure we wouldn't print the photo of bin Laden. I bet many other papers wouldn't either. So why release the photo to the public if most of the media won't print or broadcast it? It has to be a gory photo because bin Laden was shot in the head. I can only imagine what that looks like

I'm fairly certain bin Laden is dead. I know the conspiracy theorists out there will continue to say otherwise. That's OK. They have that right.

To have released the photo would have been inflammatory and unnecessary. Besides, they probably will be leaked at some point, anyway.
