Time for township gardens

April 11, 2011 - Frank Robinson
It must be spring.

I recently received by mail my annual notice from Howland Township that it's time to reserve garden plots.

I have participated in the program for the past couple years. It's a unique opportunity for people like me who do not enough property to grow a small garden. Last year, I reserved two plots. That was a little too much, as the plots are good sized. This year I'm getting just one.

I grew so much stuff last year I was giving it away to just about any takers. Because I didn't can last year, I gave away a lot of tomatoes. I also had an abundance of squash and peppers.

The plots are located along North River Road, near the little airport. The township prepares them for planting and they do a nice job. All a person has to do is stick the plants or seeds in the ground and maintain the garden through the summer. Water cans and water are available, too.

The program is offered only to township residents. The gardens are fairly secure. The only things that seem to bother the vegetables are deer and groundhogs.

To sign up for the gardens, I have added a link to this blog. Or, you can call 330-856-6464.
