Calling the shots
February 1, 2011 - Mike McLain
It appears that Browns coach Pat Shurmur got his offensive coordinator the day he was named coach.
By naming Mark Whipple the quarterbacks coach Monday, Shurmur basically said he will be the offensive coordinator. It appeared obvious that he planned to go in that direction when he said at his introductory press conference that he would call the plays.
Shurmur is taking a risk in wearing two hats. Being a head coach opens him up to criticism. Being the coordinator means the criticism could come in waves.
Previous coach Eric Mangini had ofensive coordinator Brian Daboll on board to absorb criticism after one of several bad showings by the offense. Daboll may have been criticized more by fans and the media than was Mangini.
Whipple has the credentials to be the coordinator. He served as quarterbacks coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2004-06. He spent the last two sewasons as assistant head coach for the Miami Hurricanes on the college level.
