`Osage' actor sings praises of Warren's Pendleton

April 15, 2010 - Andy Gray

My review of "August: Osage County" won't appear in the Tribune Chronicle until Friday (the short version: order tickets immediately), but there was something I left out of last week's preview story.

Chicago-based actor Shannon Cochran, who plays the oldest daughter in the national tour, has appeared in several productions at the Steppenwolf Theatre, where Warren native Austin Pendleton is an ensemble member.

Cochran said she has taught alongside Pendleton and performed in a reading of one of his plays, and she had some kind words for the hometown talent.

"He is one of the greatest teachers I've ever observed," she said. "I'd like to be directed by him some day. He's incredibly smart. He has a real gift for figuring out what a student is struggling with and pinpointing it and making up an exercise on the spot to help them."

"August: Osage County" runs through April 25 at the Palace Theatre.
